Super Lines

Post by crankit » Wed Sep 03, 2003 11:12 am

Hi, how do you guys use your super lines like pro power and such?
Do you tie a leader to it at the end, then to the lure?
If you do that, then it still limits the strength of the leader
and still can break on you. Maybe I am seeing it from
the wrong angle. Someone please clear my confusion.
Thanks!

I use a leader in really clear water; usually flourocarbon. I use a two rung swivel. I also put fishin glue on braided line knots.

I use a single strand wire leader with my Powerpro when I'm fishing for musky or big pike. The other day, I was trolling with a 10inch Jake when it got snagged. Must've been between rocks because even my lure saver didn't work. Then I attached the lure saver to my boat and used the motor to pull on the snag. Lost my lure that day not because of the line breaking, but because the cross-lok snap broke. The line was 50lb but the snap, if I remember correctly, was rated at 80 lbs. Guess it was the angle at which the pressure was exerted which caused the snap to go before the Powerpro. Strong stuff. Haven't had it break on me yet. Later on in the day, I ended up bringing up weeds and lost line and to my surprise, the lake gave me a nice Rapala crankbait someone had lost. It all comes out even in the end.

Derringer, when you use a fluorocarbon leader,
won't that snap on you? What's the point
of using a super line and then putting on a weaker
leader? Yes, the superline is strong, but
not the leader unless you're using something
that's heavy or wire. I am just trying to
get a better understanding here.
If I tie the lure straight to the superline,
then fish around heavy cover, then it's beneficial.
But then in clear water it's very high visibility.
Any thoughts?

Sometimes, I will use 4-5ft of fluorocarbon leader anywhere between 10-25lb with my main line of 50lb Powerpro. This decreases line visibility but also, in the advent of a snag, I don't have to cut off and waste lots of the expensive braided.
