GPS UNITS.....need help

Post by fishingguy » Mon Jun 30, 2003 4:40 pm

hey guys, my close friend is looking into buying a GPS unit. There are a lot of them out on the market and he wants to narrow it down to just a few. if you guys could suggest some to me i would really appreciate it. He wants it for mapping routes both on land and on water. Preferably under $250, but all suggestions over that are appreciated aswell... thanks

Garmin is a good brand for handheld GPS units. There are many to choose from. There are very basic ones that will just plot your course and other useful info. Then you can go up to the map models where you will find streets, lakes, etc for your area.
Check out Garmin's website.

As a trout fisherman, majority of the time,
I always wander off trail and just walk long the rivers
or streams. It's important for me to find my way
back to my car. So I use a handheld GPS.
I have the Garmin etrex Vista. I think that
was the one. Very handy, small, and I think
that's about your price range. If you buy it
from your area or where ever, make sure they
have the maps loaded on there for your area
and not something in another country.
That's if you buy it online. If you buy it at a local
store, it will already have it.
GPS units are great and very useful. You can
even use it in your car or where ever you go.

Hi FishinGuy,

I'm currently working on a review of the Garmin e-Trex series, one of the very good things about these is the Garmin MapSource allows you to truly customize the details of your partcular location. I don't have firsthand experience with the Magellen units, they may be less portable, but the advantage is a bigger viewing area...very good for on the road mapping, and use in the car/boat.

Tight Lines,
