Which Penn reel for lake bass fishing?

Postby jeanmelissa » Tue Jun 17, 2003 5:11 am

Which Penn spinning reel would you suggest for bass fishing at a lake? Most fishing is done off the shore or on a small boat.

I was thinking about purchasing the Penn 4400ss, but I am not sure if it is too large for what I'll be fishing for.

Thanks!
Jean

If bass fishing is what you're only doing and you're going to use
that reel for everything, then the 4400SS or 4300SS will work fine.
I don't have one, but I would pick the 4300SS because it's a bit
smaller. Go to a local store and see the size difference. The 4400 size
should be fairly big. What pound test line do you plan on putting
on there? What bait/lures do you plan to using?

I actually ended picking up the reel... I had suggested putting on 8lb test, but the guy put 12 lb. test on instead. I am considering returning the reel, but would like to make sure it's worth the time and effort. I'll be fishing for bass mostly, some walleye on an upcoming vacation, and using spinners, worms, and the flying lure for bait.

Any recommendations for my saltwater reel for fluke, stripers, etc. Looking at the Penn 535GS or the Shimano CS400A Corsair.

Any more information/advice you could give would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks again!
Jeannie

I would have put 12lb test on the 4400 reel.
If you want 8lb test, go for the 4300 size. It's a better match
