Re: new or old Stella?
I haven't loged enough time on my newer stella to say its worth the price difference but i will say the new line management system is da bomb. Casting is a breeze and line twisting is no where to be found.
Re: new or old Stella?
the older 1 is smoother, especially on 1000 and 2000-C3000 size. i did compare side to side the old and the new one, played for a long time in the shops. i end up buying a certateboatinpete wrote:I want one high end spinning outfit,is it worth buying the redone 2008 Stella or save $200 and get the older SR,am looking to buy 3000 reel.

I also say the older models were smoother. I was told this is becasue the FD models have a harder material in the gear and drivetrain. That coupled with the lighter weight materials in the frame and body equal more felt movement of the gears......I have 1 FD and a few Fb's in the 1000 size and I still prefer the 1000FB with 4lb fireline.....Just my .02 though.

Re: new or old Stella?
I do not hink the difference in price is warrantied in the 2000 and above sizes. However, the 1000FD was a big improvement in my eyes. The bail trip operation and line management improvements in the 1000 alone was worth it.
Re: new or old Stella?
The big problem with spinning reels used to be line management until Shimano redid their high end. If you are going to go high end, you would be selling yourself short by going with the old model. When one can afford to spend over 200.00 for a reel, one shouldn't sell themselves short. Go for the gusto....You will be happy you did!
Re: new or old Stella?
Not all lines of spinning reels had line management probs B4 Shimano's new line management system...
More accurately stated, Shimano's "older" spinning reels had line management problems vs their new line-up of spinners.

Re: new or old Stella?
What do you mean by line management problems?Do the currant SR Stella reels have these problems?
Re: new or old Stella?
Nope, pre-SR or non-SR designs were notorious for these inadequacies.
Daiwa had designed better systems for handling line long B4 the SR design with the ABS design and in some cases the long cast spool design.
