New Shimano Spin - casting distance compared to Daiwa?
The general concensus (not perfect) seem to be that Daiwa's spin reel cast further than Shimano's spin reel.
However, with the new Shimano design (Propulsion spool lip, aerowrap), I wonder if any of you have done tests comparing both Daiwa and Shimano's latest in terms of casting performance.
Thanks,
UL

I notice that my Steez 2500 can outcast my Stella 2500 by a decent amount.

is your Shimano the latest iteration with the paladin gears etc?

Also, to be fair, I think a 2500 size Daiwa is bigger than a 2500 size Shimano?
Re: New Shimano Spin - casting distance compared to Daiwa?
in term of line capacity, yes daiwa 2500 is equivalent to C3000 or 3000 size shimano, C3000 shimano has deeper spool than it's 2500 counterparts, but the outer spool width, the one which count when casting performance is concern is the same. now,the daiwa 2500 spool width is larger than the shimano 2500,but shimano has the taller spooldragon1 wrote:Also, to be fair, I think a 2500 size Daiwa is bigger than a 2500 size Shimano?

I guess the larger diameter spool of the Daiwa will still outcast the Shimanos, just not by much.

I have an Exist 1003 and a 2007 Stella 1000. The Daiwa may win but the delta is really insignificant. Casting distance is more about the rod, line and lure weight.

The overall height of the spool maybe taller but the effective height is still the same. So it is not taller than the 2500 size Daiwa.
After using Samurai braid 18lb test on the Stradic3000FI for about 2 weeks, I can honestly say that due to the spool design, you will not gain casting distance IF you are used to filling the spool to the max. IF you normally under spooled by 1/8 inch normally, you should see casting distance improvement if you fill the new Stradic to the max.
As you can see, it looks under spooled, even if you spool it to the max due the tapered spool lip.
As far as controlling wind knot and overall line management, it does a superb job. No wind knot and more importantly, line as thin as 18lb Samurai braid do not dig in after heavy drag pressure.

what rigs are you using that reel for?
the one with the braid.
the one with the braid.

Yes, you have a great point about spooling to the lip. I almost always spool to the lip and in this case, the Shimano design is actually a negative as I can't spool as close to the lip. My guess is that this will impact the Shimano's casting distance negatively.

That little extra distance (if there) will do you no good if the durabilty of their ultra fine main shaft is no better than this. Try reeling in what you cast with a shaft bent.
On good thing though is the new part was only 1100 yen. The bad news is you have to practically take apart the whole reel to replace it. Also, the the screws they use are easily stripped. Also, your going to need a few different size screwdrivers, phillips and slotted. Size #000, 00, and 0

aquaholik, are those spools interchangeable??
I have a Twinpower 2500, and was wondering if any of the new spools fit it.

To say the spool isnt full because there is a lip that extends past that is wrong. Its like people who cant take black bars on the side of their hdtv even thought it really means they are seeing the full image vs cropped. Btw the weight is down on the stradic fi so Im going to replace my old 2500 with a 4000.

GH,
I've been fishing spinning since 1982 and have yet to bend a main shaft in a spinning reel...Daiwa, Shimano, Abu or other.
How did you manage this? And would it have mattered between Daiwa, Shimano or other under the same situation of which it occurred?

I see that shaft. Ouch. However, using 2 - 6 lb test, I'm unlikely to do that to my reels....
