Re: Under $50 reels
Daiwa Regal or Mitchell 300X. The Mitchell Avocet reels for $20 at Wal-Mart seem killer for the money, but not in the league of the other two.
The Mitchell 300X is high speed with a 6.1 gear ratio, use it for speed. Use the Daiwa Regal Z or Regal S for cranking. The Daiwa will be smoother. Both have nice drags. Both cast excellent and have no line twist issues.
Shimano is good, but Daiwa and Mitchell rule in the low end market. Mitchell is distributed by the Abu and Berkley people (Pure Fishing). Nothing like the old Mitchells. Totally different guts. Not a single part remains from the past. The coffee grinder feel is gone.

Recommend saving another $10 and getting the Pflueger President Spinning Reel.
