Buying tackle

Post by bitesize » Mon May 19, 2003 5:35 pm

Where do you buy your tackle the most?
Online stores like Bass Pro, Cabelas, etc?
Walmart? Local tackle shops?

hey bitesize,

i usually buy my larger items at local specialty stores where i can get some expertise. For smaller items like lures, hooks, line, i'll get them at Walmart. Sometimes you can get some great deals on lures. I also purchase from online stores like Cabelas esp for items i can't find locally.

I'll usually buy my tackle at Walmart first because they have the best prices around my area. Then I'll hit a couple of local stores to try and find what I need. If I can't find it anywhere, I'll order from Cabelas, Bass Pro Shops, or other internet tackle shops.

I buy basics from Wally world or if they have great deals.
If I need something special, then visit a local tackle store.
If I buy a lot, then online. To get rid of the shipping fees.
But if there's a great deal online, I take it!

I'll typically go look and play with tackle that I am interested in at the local tackle shops then buy it online to avoid sales tax or benefit from lower prices. Bass Pro or Tackle Direct are both great places to start.

Two great sites for online gear are:

http://www.tacklethief.com <= this is like of like "My Simon" where it goes out and finds deal on gear.

http://www.gofishin.com just has a lot of great deals on gear.

I recommend buying from Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops because sometimes I question the quality of buying from stores like Walmark. If I'm in a real jam and need tackle fast I go to local stores that specialize in fishing.

Just got back from the mainland looking over new gear. Hit 3 stores, 2 one stop stores with nothing but mediocrity and junk in the way of reels and rods, hundreds of them. One fishing only specialist, but they didn't have but a coupla big surfs rods, and the biggest Lamiglas they had was rated only 3 oz.

No question in my mind that a $19.95 panfish combo has it's place, but the chince on a 10' heavy surf rod for $25 is just disgusting.

No question in my mind that now I will have to buy a good blank and fittings and make my own. That way I can have a $300 rod for $200, except it will meet all my criteria. I think I'll make a wrapped leather handle. Anything but foam rubber.

Must admit that Cabela's gets a bunch of my fishing and hunting dollars.

For on-line e-tailers, I buy the majority of my tackle from insidesportfishing.com.

¤ They have free FedEx ground shipping on orders over $50.
¤ Fantastic customer service.
¤ Unbeatable prices!
¤ They can get most anything.

And the #1 reason I buy from insidesportfishing.com is that the person you talk to is an experienced fisherman and boater that knows tackle! I can't stand the Cabelas and Bass Pro idiot receptionists who think a drag is a long inhale on a cigarette!
