Super Shallow Cranks

Post by Firstoutfisher » Mon Mar 11, 2024 9:26 pm

Looking for crankbaits that dive in the 1'-3' range for ponds and ultra shallow waters. Does anyone have an recommendations? Seems like most squarebills and shallow divers are 4+ feet

The SPRO Baby Fat John 50 and Fat John 60 both work for me, but to ensure I get less depth with them or others, I use 15lb fluorocarbon. Not sure how bad the even larger diameters affect action, but you can supposedly shallow up cranks a decent bit by moving up to way thicker diameters.

Chode already beat me to some of the top ultra-shallow diving crankbaits in the market today, but there's a few more gems available in the JDM side of the world if you are willing to spend the time and money to find them!

1. Imakatsu Gekiasa Shad: the basis and predecessor of the phenomenal new IxI Furious 0.5
2. Imakatsu Gekiasa Shad Flat: newer flatside version of the venerable Gekiasa Shad, superb for cold water conditions
3. Daiwa Tiny Peanut: you'll probably need a BFS or softer ML rod to cast this gem and sadly, it's been long discontinued
4. OSP Tiny Blitz: suspends with a tiny bit of Zappu board weight, then it becomes a true smallmouth bass killer in cold water conditions
5. Evergreen Clutch Hitter 1: perhaps the best ultra-shallow crankbait in heavy cover, especially in eel grass & timber
6. Evergreen Combat Crank 50TG: a variant of the CH1 but with a Tungsten one-knocker style rattle, great for stained water
7. Evergreen CR-2: another ultra-shallow crankbait wonder lure from EG

There are a few more JDM gems I'll keep to myself, mostly because I can't find them in my storage barn anymore!

Lucky Craft has a large assortment of shallow cranks in their catalog. Search Lucky Craft SR and Lucky Craft SSR and you should find plenty to choose from. A couple I use a lot are their BDS1, Flat Mini SR, and LC0.5 and 0.7. I think the 0.5 gets overlooked a lot because it’s so small, but it casts great and catches big fish. My first bass on Seminole over 6lbs was caught on one years ago, and my buddy landed one over 7 on the Flat mini.
