I've been waiting to see a spybaiting thread pop up here since KVD won on it. I've had a spybait in my box for the last 2 years or so and have caught a fish here or there but never really spent the time to learn it.

After watching KVD crush 5 and 6lb smallmouth on it, I figured it was time to put it back into the rotation. It's been the same story for me, just a fish here or there, nothing bigger then 1.5lbs. I've been using the Duo Realis Spinbait 80 and the G-Fix 80. Standard slow retrieve just bringing it in over the bottom or weedbeds. I'm thinking it may work out better in the fall when the bass are really chasing bait fish.

What's been everyone's experience with spybaiting?

It's been a key bait every vacation trip to N. Michigan the last 3 years.
It's a great bait for covering water much in the same manner that I use a trap here in OK.
My Dad put a 5.86 smallie in the boat on one this year and it put a lot of 1-3lb fish in the boat.
Here at home I have had a few good days on them in the winter, but I'd rather throw a jerkbait when it's cold.

We had a tournament on Erie the weekend after KVD won with it. My tournament partner tried throwing it after I started catching them on a dropshot and he couldn't get bit. He proceeded to catch 3 drum while I kept sticking them on a drop shot.

As with most baits, results may vary by day/water.

I've caught fish in clear water on it when I used it but by no means am I an expert.

Not much for me. I think I gave up on it too early.

You have to have the right gear first and foremost. 2nd you need really clean water and open water. We have very little lakes around here that are like this except for a few that will occasionally get to the needed clarity. I have only fished them for about 30 minutes and I believe I caught one fish on them.

I've had a couple of short strikes on it, but haven't really committed to fishing it a lot. Anyone know what the sink/fall rate is on the spinbait 80? Say on 8 pound fluoro?

Haven't had success with it.. maybe I just haven't fished it in the right conditions. Maybe others can chime in on that

They work on busting fish. I've caught them to 7 lbs on a home made spybait.

I have fished some of the dirtiest waters with these and caught some of the biggest fish.
I'm even catching big catfish in muddy water....

For busting fish, at least smallmouth, I will throw a chatterbait or a spook. Spybaiting may be too slow for that. The single hook on a chatterbait or spinnerbait is nice for a quick unhook. Helps with cycling through the school

only fish i ever caught on the two i own was a kokanee.

Spybaits are killer for fresh water over here in asia.

Key is as slow as possible. Also if u change out the back hook to a heavier one, the bait will shimmy side to side a little just like a sinking pencil.

To those who say you cant use it in dirty water. I use it at night without issues too.
