Take a look at the Lunkerhunt Kraken series (Dick's and Field and Stream exclusive). For $3.99 it's a decent Squarebill and helped me land my PB for my community pond (5 1/2lb spawned out female).

Strike King KVD 1.5. Just make sure to change the hooks as the stock ones are not that good.

I don't think you can beat Balsa and nobody does it better than WEC. They are pricey so a cheaper alternative would be Bagley.

I like the luckycraft 1.5. But also use the megabass s-crank. Xcalibur had a good square bill as well.

I've caught more fish on a KVD 1.5 (both smallmouth and largemouth) than any other bait in my box, so I'm inclined to say that. Just change the hooks like others have said!

If custom paint jobs at a reasonable price is of interest, my favorite 1.5 squarebill is from Hoffmann's Lures. He can make them in silent or rattling, I fish only silent - personal preference. I live in Northern WI and his paint jobs let me match the hatch perfectly. His HD Perch is the color I throw the most because perch are the main source of forage in our lakes.

LC 1.5/2.0/2.5s are $10 a piece at TW- great price for them, colours are unmatched. KJ flats are on sale too but a little bit more- great flat sided with a tight wiggle. I'm also a fan of the livingston squarebills/howellers. Not so much for their squawking gimmic, but the colours, hooks, & durability are great if you can find them less than retail.

The KVD 1.5 and 2.5's, the Xcalibur and Bandit square bills are my favorites. Unfortunately the last two are now discontinued. :(

For me it'll always be Strike King KVD 1.5 in Natural Pumpkinseed color (Basspro's exclusive color), because it's what I caught my PB on twice in the same day. Make sure to change out the front trebles to size 4 Mustad Short Shank Triple Grip because the original trebles hang up on the bill every other cast.

I sed cheap budget cranks if I'm pounding rocks and wood or am fishing waters with a lot of pike. If I'm in sparse rocks and sand in clear water, I'll use the good ones.

I recommend a bds1 in rootbeer or chartreuse shad if the water is more stained or dirtier, and then stepping up to the original bagley b2 or bds 2. Zoom cranks are 'my cranks' that I brag about, but I'm sticking to my recommendation.
