Square-Bills?

Post by aqua71 » Mon Apr 13, 2015 10:59 pm

I’m looking to add square-bills to my arsenal this year. I plan to fish them around grass and wood if that makes a difference. I’d appreciate some suggestions. Thanks.

LC BDS 3 is one of the best plastic squarebills out there. I also like the Zoom WEC E1 for a balsa bait. Both rarely ever get snagged up.

Lucky Craft RC and LC DRS, Megabass Knuckle 60's, 6th Sense Crush 50x, Bandit Squarebills, and KVD 1.5 and 2.5's make up my squarebills. I just bought some of the new Bill Lewis Echo's, cant wait to try those noisy guys out.

I have a bunch as I like using them but my favorites are actually the less expensive models, maybe because I fish them harder but they work. For silent ones I'm liking the Storm Arashi 3 and 5 but still only a full season with them, the Bagley Balsa B is a killer as are my Rapala DT Fat 3 baits. For rattling baits I'm gearing up to fish my Bagley Rattling Killer B and of course the 3/8oz Bomber Square A, that little bait has really come through for me when the fish are chasing or swiping atbut not hitting other square bills, you throw the square A and that one they eat, the small profile is what really helps it. If you can find the Xcalibur XCS square bill give those a shot, they come in a 100,200 and 300 size but I don't use the 300 size so I can help you on that but the 100 and 200 sizes are very good baits. The last one I'll mention is a Cotton Cordell Big-O, on our river it is one of the premier square bill cranks as the smallmouth just smash it, I'm not sure if it is the shape or the action or both but they draw violent strikes from the smallmouth.

I've been really liking the River2Sea Biggie Poppa series. Not too pricy and equipped with quality hardware out the box.

Little johns and fat johns is a must add with square bills. They are my most productive cranks I own.

You're going to get a thousand different opinions and suggestions, but almost everyone owns a KVD squarebbill. 1.0 and 1.5 sizes are your best bet to start out with, and they are cheap. If your not hitting an object then you best be imparting some action with your rod or with the reel. A short pause every few turns always produces for everyone too! Hope that helps!

I second the R2S Big Poppa series, tried one last year and have been impressed. I also throw the Luck E Strike RC Square bills as well...

Lot of good Squarebills, I like to fish the wood one's around wood and the plastic for general use. The wood one's seem to come thru the wood better, because the float a little better.

Depends on your budget!

You want to spend $5 per bait? 8? 11? 14? 18?

You'll get all sorts of suggestions until you narrow it down
