Snaps with crankbaits?
Snaps with crankbaits?
Wondering if you guys use snaps with crankbaits or tie straight to the lure?
Are there times when you use snaps and times you don't?
I seem to use snaps all the time but I think its because I'd rather not re-tie! Maybe I am losing action by using a snap or am I giving the crank more action?
I generally only throw shallow cranks, squarebills etc.....

Re: Snaps with crankbaits?
I don't know if they give more or less action, but I use them! Especially fishing for trout in 17 degree weather. I don't like the duo lock snaps, they seem weak and come open to easy. Basspro makes some very solid snaps, only snaps I will use from here on out.
Re: Snaps with crankbaits?
I used to use snaps until I had one come undone. I'll tie direct to the split ring from now on.

Re: Snaps with crankbaits?
I use the Berkley snaps all the time on cranks and lipless baits. Jerkbaits I tie straight to the lure or split ring. I think the snap gives the cranks a wider wobble as the split ring can move more in the snap. So far I havent had a snap failure and have landed a lot of fish using them from Bass to Steelhead!

I always use snaps.

Good to know I have been doing it right all along even though without snaps is also the right way!

Re: Snaps with crankbaits?
Those opposed to using snaps will mostly tell you that they do not use them because they can open up and loose you a fish in the process.
I have been using snaps with cranks for the past 30 years. Yes I have had e few open up on me and cost me a fish (mostly probably due to me not closing the snap properly in the first place). However if you think of the time it saves you every time you change a CB and the extra casts you can make in a day, I have no doubt caught more extra fish over the years to make up for the ones I lost.
Use a good quality snap and you will be OK.

unless he has changed since i read his book, there is a little known angler named kevin van dam that says he uses snaps with crankbaits.dusty wrote:Snaps are for kids with zebcos

From Kevin VanDam’s Bass Strategies Revised Edition. Page 100.
“Snaps: There are anglers who advocate tying all lures direct, but I’m not one of them. I use snaps on most of my crankbaits, spoons and sub-surface lures, although I tie topwaters, jigs and soft plastics to the line.”
not sure if he likes zebcos.

He sure does. He fishes for Quantum, a Zebco owned company. Or maybe Quantum owns Zebco...either way, same team.froteur wrote:not sure if he likes zebcos.
As far as snaps go, it would depend on the bait for me. I don't use cranks that much (except for the lipless variety, and a few shallow cranks here and there), and usually know which patterns will work for where I'm going, so I don't change baits in the field that often. I can see the advantage though, and wouldn't hesitate to use snaps to save time in a tournament situation.
