Braid to Leader - what's your knot of choice?
Braid to Leader - what's your knot of choice?
Referencing standard braid only (non-hollow) and recognizing there are countless methods and names people choose for their connection knot, which of these do you tie? Choose up to three.

Shin Fukae/lazy Alberto for me. Quick and easy to tie while in the kayak, and haven't had any issues with it. Slim enough to go through the guides easily too.

Looked it up and see how it is a little different. Will add it to the list of options!

Crazy/lazy alberto 7 up 7 back with a 3-5 turn finishing knot.
Re: Braid to Leader - what's your knot of choice?
That knot becomes "improved" if you pass the braid back through the fluoro loop twice. And cut the fluoro tag end perfectly flush, while leaving 1/4" of braid tag to fluff out.
It's the best finesse braid to leader knot imo - the amount of tension needed to properly seat a FG knot could damage 4-8lb fluoro.

Midnight is my favorite. More slim amd stronger than others when tied correctly.

Looked it up and added it to the poll. Side comment, if you're going to go through the effort to tie a midnight knot, you might want to consider using hollow braidbobmatsuoka wrote: ↑Wed Jun 08, 2022 5:34 amMidnight is my favorite. More slim amd stronger than others when tied correctly.

Re: Braid to Leader - what's your knot of choice?
Hi Cal! Will try to do a video in the weekend. I have learned this knot 25 years ago when started using braid. Fg and midnight were the ones I have learned from my friends. Most of them keep using fg, but saying that midnight is better. Lol. Bobbin knot is the other one we all use for heavy stuff offshore and is stronger than both.
I have tested countless times to tie each of them on both ends of a braid line to fuor and then test. Midnight is always stronger. It's also more compact.

Piggy backing off of the line-system thread.
Do use the FG Knot and have amalgamated a few approaches for how I do...
Braids from 6lb-12lb, fluoro from 6lb-10lb.
13 x pairs of plaits, 5 turn rizutto finish, no hitches. 11 will probably work but for the line brands i use 13 is the least I've gotten it down to to not slip with consistency... 10 plaits provided inconsistent, undesirable results.
Help, I'm nerding...
Add: I can tie this in the field... not "fast" but have enough practice in to do so consistently and reliably.

Some says that it shouldn't tie too much turns to FG knot because it can't be correctly tightened if there is too much turns. Some says that FG knot needs to be pulled tight until color of knot changes to slightly transparent. But personally I haven't seen any issues with 'too much' turns in FG knot...

fish for just about every species of freshwater fish that swims.
use flouro leads from 8lbs to 80lbs (smallies to muskie).
I only use the surgeons knot for tying my flouro lead to my braid mainline.
It can take muskie and salmon, can be tied in the dark (in seconds)....it's is truly the best knot (all things considered) on the planet.

Re: Braid to Leader - what's your knot of choice?
I use a knot a friend showed me. It's a single uni with the fluoro and an Alberto with the braid. Tied this way, both tag ends exit the knot towards the reel rather than one of them facing away from the reel and potentially causing the knot to hang up on a guide. He doesn't have a name for it but his name is Dan so I guess it's Dan's knot
Re: Braid to Leader - what's your knot of choice?
Do not use leaders often and double uni suffice for now. Would appreciate a very easy and strong small knot that sails through guides, but I have not seen one yet.
