Knot question

Oh no, knot another knot question!!!!!

If there's a more appropriate place to ask this please move it.

I, like many others, fish braid on my spinning setups. 20 # Samurai is my go to. I use this with a leader of 7# Sunline FC Sniper.

A newer leader knot that is gaining a lot of popularity is the FG knot.

Are you guys having success using this knot on light lines like this? I see it is very popular in the saltwater community with 20+lb leader material. Any tips on tying it with light line?

Get the Daichii Knot Tool 2.0. Holds the line in place and is a snack to use. I use it for all braid strengths from 6lb to 40lb and leaders from 6lb to 45lb. Comes with instructions, showing how to tie a Rizutto finish. Essential to pull hard on the knot until the braid changes colour before you tighten the finish section. 1 to 2 mins to tie in the field, and the knots last for months.

I'm running 30 lb braid to 10 lb fluoro leader and have used the FG knot for about a year an a half now. I really like it, it's very strong. When I've gotten hung up, it almost always breaks at the terminal knot, not the leader connection knot. Note that this is what I want to happen in the event of a snag. If it matters, I usually use a modified uni knot or a San Diego jam knot as my terminal knot.

It does take a little longer to tie, I was actually tying it last night while watching tv. For whatever reason, the knot failed to hold twice last night when I attempted to cinch it down, the leader pulled itself loose from the braid wraps. On the third time tying it, the braid held onto the leader.

This is probably my only negative with the FG knot. Again, although I've used it with my light line setups for over a year now, there are still a few times when it won't hold when I cinch it down. I am willing to admit that it might be the quality of my wraps, but I do take my time to make sure they're done correctly (doesn't mean that they are correct though). On the brighter side, I appreciate that the knot fails when you attempt to cinch it, so you definitely know that something isn't right. If the knot is going to fail, I want it to fail when I tie it and not give the illusion that it's a strong knot only to fail on the water.

I have been using the PR knot for lighter lines as of late.

FG is crazy simple for heavier line. But when dealing with light stuff. You're best bet is to use the daichii knot assit type tool.

For light lines a pr knot using nothing more than a fly tying bobbin and a thread bobbin is all you need.

I have a dedicated PR bobbin. But i find it's weight and tension is best on heavier lines. Where with the light stuff. 4lb -10lb braid all that is needed is is minimal resistance to keep line from twisting.

Spin the bobbin down about an inch...then back up 2 inches........then back down half way. lock with 3-4 hitches and trim tags.
I hate half hitching...so wrapping back down seems faster to me.

Thanks for the replies guys, I think I’m going to take a spool of line to work with me and practice at my desk.

With the light line should I be increasing my number of wraps?

Going from 20# Samurai to 7# FC sniper.

I use around 18 wraps (9 each side) for lighter leader, with a maximum of 20. Too many wraps and it gets hard to tighten the knot so that the braid changes colour all the way along its length.

If you leave yourself a nice tag end of leader I find you can get it to grab every time. I clinch the braid in my teeth and do the wraps with the leader, seems to work best for me.

This is how I tie the FG knot.
Hope I can explain this a way that it makes sense....

I use a pair of hemostats and clamp onto the end of my braid (instead of using my mouth or teeth), I then take the
hemostats and tuck them into my belt where it buckles to create tension on the braid, I lean my rod away from me pulling the braid tight.
I then use my leader to wrap it, I make it as tight as I can and will usually do 20 wraps.

Basically just like in the video but with hemostats.

Where can the Daiichi tool be bought?

I bought mine from isofishing in Australia, but they can be bought from Digitaka. Worth its weight in gold.
