Best line for crankbaits??

Post by BlaineFred » Mon Jul 24, 2017 1:02 pm

Would appreciate views and experiences on casting shallow and medium-depth crankbaits, like 3/8 oz.

What is your preferred line and why do you prefer it?

Sunline Sniper is all I use for cranks of all sizes and depth ranges.
17# for squarebills, and shallow runners down to 6'. Mainly because I fish them around
12# or 14# for all cranks that run deeper than 6'.
Sniper is small diameter compared to like sized mono. 17# throws like 12#.
Excellent limpness, knot strength, and abrasion resistance.

Are you sure you use Sunline Sniper fluorocarbon line???
Never seen a Sunline Sniper in #17 size, as I recall correctly it only been available in #14,#16 or #20.

I use 10lb sniper, 12lb sniper and 11lb armilo. I fish shallow mostly 10' and less and in that usually less than 6'.

I use Sufix Super 21 in 13lb and 17lb mainly for shallow cranking between 1-8ft. I used this mono for a year now and very happy with it.

I wasn't familiar with the Super 21, so I did a little research, and began a separate thread on the the topic.

I'm going to buy some and try it.

Thanks...but what test do you use for shallow and deep cranks?

I guess I should have been clearer. For shallow cranks I actually use Sunline deifer in 13 to 17 # depending on weight of lure and structure. For any thing deeper I use shooter 13 # line. Both these line are very manageable and cast well.

Why don't you use the Shooter on the shallow cranks?

Why the mono on the shallow?

I tend to fish a little faster with shallow cranks so fish don't really see the line as clearly, and don't fish real clear water much. Also getting the lure deeper not a problem. I know a lot y'all don't agree but a find that the easiest line to cast might be the best. To many variables for any line to always be the best. I also like to fish topwater with some of the same rods I fish shallow cranks. In shallow water a lot of the casting is to a particular spot, mono works for me. Changing back to mono didn't seem to hurt my strike ratio.

Actually, Sniper has nearly the same diameter as Tatsu, InvizX, and Shooter Marionete.

Shooter Finesse is the line with the smaller diameter, but ti only goes up to 9 lb.

12 pound Seagar AbrazX.

Gets it down and also offers some good strength in case you get hung up.

12 or 14# flouro. My favorite is Toray Biwa Exthread. Never had any problems with breakoffs or anything
