Always use a nylon or electric tape backing with braid. Even 2 or 3 meters of nylon is enough to avoid braid slipping on the reel spool.

A whole spool of braid spinning free on your reel when you need to put some pressure on a fish is really disturbing.

Some of the new braid ready spools work fine without either tape or backing. In this case I just fill the reel all the way up with braid. Standard spools I use tape.
