MAXCUATRO LINE DIAMETER WARNING

Post by jim spooner » Tue Jul 26, 2016 1:07 am

For those of you, like me, that may be compelled to try the newer smaller pound test (20, 30, 40) Maxcuatro braids, be advised that their claim of 25% thinner may be a bit over-zealous….specifically the hi-vis yellow. I’ve been using the 20lb moss green and it is thinner as advertised, but after ordering a spool of the hi-vis yellow, I noticed it is considerably larger diameter….same or LARGER than 20lb Power Pro Super Slick. Weird. I’ll continue to use the Maxcuatro in the moss green since there is a diameter advantage, but I wish it was offered in the easier-to-see aqua green color of power Pro Super Slick. The visibility issue would’ve been resolved with the yellow, but at the expense of the thicker line diameter.

Apparently the spool is mislabeled.

Assuming that the spool is mislabelled, I’m trying to figure out what the pound test actually is. I measured (calipers) my other 20lb test as .0075” and the “mislabelled” 20lb spool measures .010”. According to the Maxcuatro specs, the 30lb is .009” dia. And the 40lb is .011 dia. I would think that the calipers might tend to flatten the line, preventing a true diametrical measure, so I’m inclined to think its .011/40lb test. If anyone has any 30 or 40 lb Maxcuatro, I’d appreciate if you could measure it and let me know what you measure. The only other option that I can think of would be to rig up a break-test setup. It’d just like to be able to correctly label it before I put into my inventory.

A lot of companies lie about the diameter. That's why I like pure fishing's products, they don't lie.

I don’t think mislabeling can be construed as a lie…..more of a processing issue.

I got a replacement spool of the 20# Maxcuatro (hi-vis yellow) and its diameter measures as advertised. Problem (mislabeled spool) solved.
