That DC whine

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

That DC whine

Post by doomtrprz71 »

I bought a exscence dc reel and I have found myself hating buying a Shimano all because of the whine of the DC ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

I guess I need to take another trip to see if it was the fishing or the whine irritating me

Yep, I'm right there with you. Im fishing, but I'm really out there for the peace and quiet.....much the same as sitting in a deer stand.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

That whine is annoying as can be. I don't let co-anglers with DC reels in my boat!!!!

There is a setting on the reel you can set it to that removed the wine if I recall. It hinders the casting distance ever so slightly but pretty sure the reel is silent. You can also cast it with zero thumb and it won’t backlash even when it hits the water.

Or where ear plugs or headphones

It might have just been frustration from having issues getting a 13yr old on a slot redfish, but I'm dead serious every cast just irritated me and eventually I switched to my steez a hlc. I'm gonna try it again in May and see if it keeps enraging me, the good thing is one of my coworkers already wants it if I do turn it loose.

I don't find it annoying at all, but i found the whine to be way cooler back in the original antares/cacutta te days when the dc coils were exposed instead of being inside a plastic shell. That was some cool transformers sound they made.

Calais DC makes a awesome whine. It's got to be the body material acting as an amplifier

If you're referring to the first generation of calais dc, as far as i remember, the dc module wasn't in a plastic shell like all the newer dc reels, and i am pretty certain this is the reason because the first calcutta dc had the exact same whine.

You are correct in the uncoated coils (conformally coated - however unhoused in plastic). However I believe the resonance is accentuated through the metal body.

It may also be the fact that the rod this reel is supposed to be on is back at the builder because the grip split :-({|=

And it currently is on a tatula rod and that feels wrong

I don't think its the body because i had a conquest 50 dc, and it sounded exactly like a metanium mg dc or the 2015 met, all of which have the plastic shell on top of the coils.

Fun fact the whine isn’t inherent to the dc system and can be programmed in/out or even programmed to sound like something else. A guy in japan who was savvy with programming microcontrollers made his scorpion dc7 which was the only dc reel to come silent from the factory sound like a certain japanese train jingle on cast.
