Inshore reel for 7M Expire glass

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Inshore reel for 7M Expire glass

Post by russ57 » Tue Aug 08, 2023 7:51 am

I'm looking for an a new reel for my expire 7M Glass rod. Combo will be used for beach fishing in the flats-mostly for throwing spooks, etc, so thinking something in the 7:1 range for versatility. I will also throw other lures like small swimsuits on jighead, jerkbaits, fluke, etc. So kind of an all around medium setup. I have a scorpion 6.2:1 on the rod now, however I don't like the idea of ruining it in the salt, since the MGL spool is magnesium. Don't want to take curd DC in the salt. I want something that will be able to cast light baits well, and not backlash too much in the wind. Line will likely be 30 pound braid. The reels I am considering are:

-JDM Zillion (good for light lures/wind, clicking drag will be cool for saltwater fish)
-Tranx 150 (really liked it when I held it in the store, have heard goof things but not a ton of reviews on it).
-Tatula SV
-Just use the scorpion MGL and see how it does
-Metanium? Not sure how it will hold up but it is always fun to cast and has a lot of cool factor for me.
-Maybe something like an SLX 150?

The reel will probably live a pretty hard life if I'm being honest, since I will be wading around, and I prioritize landing fish over keeping my gear pristine. My cured K has been dunked many times and dropped in sand and has had no real issues outside of the time it got really sandy. It isn't as smooth as it used to be but I don't notice an issues on the water.

Has any used the tranx 150 enough to compare it to the zillion? Alternatively, should I just get the JDM metanium since it isn't much more expensive than the others, or is the magnesium in the salt a no-go?

At the moment I am probably leaning zillion or tranx, but not sure.

I have a custom glass rod for throwing chatterbaits inshore for reds and trout, it had a steez a hlc but it was a bit wild in the wind for my tastes and it now has a jdm zillion HD and it's perfect.

Scorpion will be fine, the spool is not magnesium. MGL stands for MagnumLight not magnesium. A friend uses one, fishes a lot and has no problems with it. Also have several friends using the 70MGL with zero issues.

I am just going to try the scorpion I think-I'd prolly rather ruin a scorpion in salt than a more expensive zillion or metanium.

Personally I prefer glass for saltwater because it is much better for fighting a fish. I think a lot of the teramar rods are a glass blend.

I do like it for reds, but I prefer the neo NFC blanks over pure glass for trout, especially fishing Corky's.

Tranx 150 or Daiwa Costal are the only baitcasters I'd throw inshore. I threw a Tatula ct inshore for a while, the salt got to the bearings pretty quick.

I have a Bantam that I have used inshore for reds. It’s a great reel and casts as well as my more expensive Metaniums do

I have used the Chronarch G and I am very happy with it. I have also used the Curado MGL and have been impressed with its performance at a lower price point.
