New Aldebaran MGL?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

New Aldebaran MGL?

Post by yellowcard129 » Wed Dec 21, 2022 4:42 pm

Any info if Shimano is making a new Alde MGL anytime soon? the last model is a 2018 so I feel like it's gotta be coming especially after they just came out with the bfs version. I want to buy one but would hate to buy one right before the new model comes out. Also what's the deal with the 30 size High gear models. Seems like they've been out of stock everywhere all year. The normal gear ratio is in stock but not the high gear.

That would be nice if they did make a new one. I wouldn't mind if they used the new FTB braking system in a 30 size reel either. Great for pitching with 10lb FC and such. The BFS "could" don't but, would be easily spoiled when casting the same lure.

I wonder how the next aldebaran bfs is even selling. That thing is so ugly that even with it being a great performer, i don't hear anyone talk about it. Personally wouldn't want to have one on any of my rods.

I just don't think BFS is very popular in the U.S. but im guessing it's big in Japan? or at least I hope it is. The normal Aldebaran MGL already throws baits down to an 1/8th oz very well and can handle up to a 1/2oz+ extremely well also so there's a big range there but the BFS is pretty limited. I just don't understand why japan pretty much hasnt been making any 30 HG high gear models all year but continue to make it in the lower gear ratio. I've been going to Digitaka and they pretty much haven't had any in-stock all year but continue to restock the low gear model. πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈ

The Aldebaran BFS seems to sell out within a couple minutes of selling out. Not sure if it is because of limited production capabilities from Shimano or, if the reel just sells that fast.

I been loving my Aldebaran BFS.

My only real problem with the new Aldebaran BFS is the color. Other than that, it's great.

For whatever this is worth, Jun at Japan Tackle already has the Aldebaran MGL30 in his reel archive section.

I still want to get one, but my God they look so bad. That dial is the most gaudy awful design. I could get over it, but compared to say a Bantam, Metanim, etc. the Aldebaran looks like it is made by a different company. I even considered a 2018 Aldebaran 30 MGL instead of the new one.

"Ugly" like the little Wild Haired Trolls that were pencil accessories back a couple decades ago, or like some of these Hollyweird whacks after their umpteenth plastic surgery gone wrong? :P

My MGL30 with the Avail Honeycomb spool and the magnetic brake that Hedgehog Studios sells for it is pretty sweet.

I've actually been a bit curious about the MGL30 Alde since finding an OG Alde BFS is a bit tougher these days.

I was hunting and reading up on the 2012 Aldebaran BFS. Saw a few online, wasn't sure they have X-ship or any major features used today. Still an 80mm handle...

I've been thinking about the MGL30 as well. Does anyone know if there is a big difference in casting lighter weights compared to the 50MGL?

I don't think Shimano came out with their version of dual bearing pinion support until post HEG. Also, if I were to procure a nice 2012 Alde BFS, I would tune and mod it akin to what John G. has done with his fleet of OG 50 sized Shimanos.

I was just looking at my 12 Aldebaran BFS today and thinking how I have neglected it last year. ](*,) I plan to use it for some mag BFS action. Light T rigs and such. It's such a tiny reel.

It's one of my favorite platforms and disappears in hand...and per John G., The 12 Alde BFS is slightly smaller frame, and different spool and side plate than the Alde. MG7. The 12 Alde was also the reel that Fenwick designed their Tiemco Golden Wing BFS series to match up with perfectly.

I have a very highly tuned and modded 12 Alde MG7 paired with a Fenwick/Tiemco Golden Wing 6'10" LP+J triggerless. One of my favorites for 1/4-1/3 topwaters and mag finesse plastics.
