Do You Use Spinning Reels?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Smallmouth are all that I fish. Spins dominate for me. Have for forty years, always will.

Just did today...two biggest pre-spawn bass came on a 1/8 oz custom screwlock Ned head on a Spin Jig arm with a Mepps #1 silver French blade, custom pearl body/translucent pink 2.5" single tail grub. First was 14" and just over 2 lbs and the other female was 17 1/4" and about 2 1/4 lbs (very skinny). Both fish were literally caught pitching 15'-25' casts in between dead brush, trees, underbrush, in about 3 FOW along the bank edges of East Stones River.

Gear was my custom Lamiglas XMG50 LSJ 781 extended to 6'9" paired with a Shimano TwinPower C2000SHG + 8lb yellow Sunline Asegai + short 12" 17lb fluoro leader (need heavy leader as these fish will run me into wood with this 1 power spinjig blank). It's hellaciously entertaining to get 'yer arse kicked (at least for a bit) on light spinning gear combat fishing in tight areas...

There's a time and place for spinning undoubtedly.

one best part of my time on the water is hearing the amazing dragging sound from my Stella/Exist/Steez/Airity/Vanquish/Certate/Presso LTD/Gekkabijin EX...by a fighting fish

Baitcasting reels offer little that joy [-X

The overall smooth drag of an Exist or other flagship is unmatched. The drag sound is exquisite and the feeling of hooking a fish on light line and a flagship spinning reel is just something that can’t be explained. Totally different from a baitcaster in that regard. Both fun in their own way.

not to mention being able to finger the line with a spinning reel.

yes, you can try to do it with a BC, but it isn't nearly as easy or effective.

fishing senkos with a baitcaster is just straight up silly.

Why are the reel manufacturers phasing out the anti reverse component on the new models. I 'm kind of late to the game. Whats wrong with back reeling a large fish???

It's a SW thing, to stop water intrusion. Drags have come far enough (coupled with widespread use of braid) that back-reeling isn't really needed anymore.
Try not to let your mind wander. It is much too small to be outside unsupervised.

Yeah that’s the general consensus with manufacturers nowadays I suppose. I was saddened to watch that trend.

bought a few Vanfords and now my collection of Chronarchs, Curados and Tranx are collecting dust, I am a good baitcaster fisher but no more worrying about bird nest and things.

By making a Anti Reverse one way they reduce costs, by removing other parts required for a 2-way Anti Reverse they reduce costs.

Telling you it's for "saltwater mitigation" priceless.

Agreed, but that's how they spin it.

You know winding your spinning reel in reverse allows some of the lost wiped off grease to recoat the main gears teeth.

"Well now you do."
