Looking for a new baitcaster

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Looking for a new baitcaster

Post by zelmo » Tue Jun 14, 2022 8:33 am

Let me start this by saying that I have many high end reels from Shimano and Daiwa. This includes a number of BFS variations. I actually don’t know much about the current crop of “budget” reels.

I do still have some Curado 101Ds on rigs that don’t get used much. I want to use one of those to throw small swimbaits that come in around 6 grams. The Curado leaves a lot to be desired for this application as it does better with a few more grams.

I don’t want to spend much on this so I was looking at what is available. A reel that caught my eye is the SLX MGL. Any thoughts on this model or other suggestions?

I believe that the Alphas CT SV is the best bang for your buck reel in the Daiwa lineup. A smooth, solid, versatile workhorse type of reel.

Thanks, but that reel costs 2x the SLX MGL. If I go that route I will want a new rod also. I am trying to stop spending.

I have a SLX 150 DC on my son’s casting rod. It throws 8g (1/0 Flashy Swimmer with 2.8 Keitech) credibly. The Curado 70
MGL is good for those kinda baits, as well. If I split the difference I’d predict that the SLX 70 MGL will do what you want it to do (but not be ideal for it, of course).

Thanks for that information. It is exactly what I was looking for.

Since my original post I decided to give in to the monkey. I will get another Steez CT and a rod to match for this application. I will just use the Curado and rod for something else.

I was going to say "Good luck with that!", but see from your latest post that it is unnecessary. :big grin:

The Curado 100D were the same frame as the Chronarch 50MG I believe.
slip bobbing is the laziest way to fish

Same size, yes, but the 50MG was magnesium. I have both. Not sure what your point is?
