Smoothest gear grease.
Smoothest gear grease.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a gear grease that makes the gears as smooth as possible? I have been using the cal's grease and Shimano ACE-2 for years, and want to try something new. Was thinking of trying the ZPI F-0 Pro Grease Medium. Is it any good? And by "good", all i care about is for the gears to feel as smooth as possible.

I have ZPI grease that I use, but I don't think they make it anymore.

Which one is it? And is it any good? Have you compared it to others?HobeyBaker wrote: ↑Tue Nov 09, 2021 5:29 amI have ZPI grease that I use, but I don't think they make it anymore.

I use Maxima. It stays put , heat won't make it run. Most motorcycle shops or speed shops carry it.

Yamalube cut with Corrosion X. Mix to your desired consistency.

I have zpi medium grease , wasn't too impressed.
Re: Smoothest gear grease.
I use ZPI Medium exclusively and I think it's really great for casting performance/distance, but it's nowhere near the smoothest grease out there. It's a tradeoff I'm happy to make - but if there's a grease that's just as performant while also feeling smoother, I'm all ears.

Re: Smoothest gear grease.
I've started to migrate my working reels over to Calcium Sulphonate based marine grease, winch tests using this grease show beyond any doubts that it's the grease for marine gearing application.
Re: Smoothest gear grease.
Are you referring to the zpi oil? How would you cast further with grease inside the gears?Drakestar wrote: ↑Wed Nov 10, 2021 12:19 pmI use ZPI Medium exclusively and I think it's really great for casting performance/distance, but it's nowhere near the smoothest grease out there. Yamaha Blue grease. Big tube for a low price that will last forever. Crazy to see some of the prices on “reel” grease.
Re: Smoothest gear grease.
Hah. Yeah, that was a brain fart. I service with both ZPI Medium grease and their oil, but conflated reeling with casting.SSS wrote: ↑Wed Nov 10, 2021 2:30 pmAre you referring to the zpi oil? Would you say that the Zpi medium grease is worth it? They're twice as expensive as the Shimano counterpart.Drakestar wrote: ↑Thu Nov 11, 2021 1:45 pmHah. Yeah, that was a brain fart. I use the medium ZPI grease. It's good stuff and better than the stock Shimano grease that comes on the reels.SSS wrote: ↑Fri Nov 12, 2021 2:30 amWould you say that the Zpi medium grease is worth it? Re: Smoothest gear grease.
Last year I had settled on ZPI F-0 Pro Grease Medium for all gears and ZPI F-0 Pro Grease Soft for sliding/moving metal parts/frame bearings/worm gear.
After some research, I now use Dupont Krytox GPL 225 for gears rather than ZPI Medium, which is a significant upgrade over an excellent grease.
The Dupont grease is a bit expensive, but a "little goes a long ways". I have used it on 40+ reels, using less than a quarter of a 2 oz. tube.
Regards,
Doc
