2020 Metanium MGL spool bearing

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

2020 Metanium MGL spool bearing

Post by Fishingelbow » Wed Jun 30, 2021 5:43 pm

I make it a habit of cleaning the spool bearings on my new reels. When I started to remove them from my Metanium, I noticed the one attached to the spool had a spring behind it. At that point I kind of chickened out, afraid I might mess something up and be unable to put things together properly afterwards ;) . I've removed bearings held by a pin before with the proper tool, but I've never run into a spring behind a bearing in that position. Does anybody have experience/tips with this? [-o< Many thanks!

Usually says on the schematic "non user replaceable sool pin" or something to that degree...

One of 2 ways.

Remove the spool bearing shield and blast out inside crud

Or remove the pin and do it properly. Just be mindful of the pin and its reinsertion (a little oil helps prevent galling). The spring isn't anything to be worried about.

What are all those metal "C" pieces?

Thank you very much, Slazmo. I always "do it properly" with Acetone in an ultrasonic cleaner before re-lubing with a drop of Alchemy. I was worried the spring had to be positioned in a particular way or that part 6528 would interfere with putting it back in place afterwards. The Meta Spool Schematic will be a tremendous help.
Now to implement my Biohazard Safety Protocol level 13 to make sure I don't put that tiny spring into orbit!

FYI, just take a look at the bearing and the retainer material before using acetone.

Yes, I noticed the rubber O-rings that I assume don't play well with acetone. [-(
Thanks again!

Now that these silent tune bearings are more common you'll find them obsolete reels, but a little care is needed with them. Not an easy task replacing those odd sized O-Rings.
