Drag?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Drag?

Post by rando » Sat Sep 05, 2020 6:50 pm

I have yet to fish a low profile reel with a drag anywhere nearly as smooth as a drag on a spinning reel.
Forgive my ignorance if there are exeptions, but for majority of reels this holds true.
What is the engineering obstacle?

Drag that's running on the main gear that transfers through the pinion gear and into the spool rotation.

Most low profile drags are also effectively single element washers too, and most pressure plate washers are pressed sheet and not flat and or lapped by the manufacturer either...

Well...25-30 yrs ago drags on spinning reels were terrible. had to master the back crank.
slip bobbing is the laziest way to fish

Its possible to have smooth drags on baitcasters . Not so common now but when 1 and 2 kg line class was all the rage for those chasing IGFA or ANSA records many people used leather with graphite powder rubbed into them along with lapped metal washers. This produced very smooth drags for those very light line classes. For general use greased carbontex washers are quite acceptable but as far as current baitcasters go shimanos dartanium washers are smooth but high maintenance as they get very messy inside, a bit like the brake dust you get all over your wheels on a car but mixing with the gear lube.

Your right on the Dartanium. It's like these soft brakes and discs on cars these days as people was an assuring feel and bite coupled with softness on the brakes.

Drags are the same, not many people know that swapping out can adversely change your braking parameters, however you need to change as the materials you've put in did. If you fish a Dartanium drag as you do a Carbontex one your going to experience polar opposite outcomes.

Dartanium has its place - but not in any of my working reels other than those collecting on the shelf as out of box examples.
