MGL

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

I've found, in my own fishing, that spool weight, and how close to the spool shaft that weight is concentrated, is what really affects how light a bait I can throw, provided I'm using a rod that will load with that light bait.

I have been using a Chronarch MGL for the past 3 years. I've often wondered how any reel could cast better or feel any better. Recently got a Scorpion 70 (just because) and I swear it casts just as well and to me feels just as smooth on the retrieve, although I did add 2 more bearings to the handle. The upside is it's a 70 size, so to me feels so much better. It's now my go-to reel and the Chronarch is in the drawer.

i noticed a huge difference between the 13 Metanium (which was an excellent reel) and the 2020 Metanium. Like, not even close in terms of casting performance. I have an SLX MGL, Bantam, and the new Metanium. Doesn't seem to be as big of a jump in casting performance between the MGL spools, though the Metanium is still noticeably better with lighter baits, in my experience.

What is the weight range for a typical MCL spool?

I don't think 1/8oz would be unreasonable on the low end, with the right rod. There is no top end that I'd be uncomfortable with, especially with the Bantam. The only downfall is line capacity. I would think 2oz or so would be enough to spool it with 30-40lb braid.

Thanks for that info, but I was wondering about the weight of the spool itself.

The Antares spool is 13.2g, Metanium is 14.1g. Not entirely sure about the earlier generations.

Thanks. How much lighter are those than the none-MGL spools?

That’s with the bearing. Here’s a list I grabbed off youtube without the bearing for easier comparison.

Curado 70 non mgl is 15.54g, I think that’s the biggest drop in weight. Metanium for example stayed pretty much the same.
