New 2020 Shimano Metanium

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Shimano US video. Aaron Martens brings up a subtle but good point, which will go past most non-Bantam owners...”Its warmer” My hands freeze with my Bantam in cold weather, even with gloves

https://youtu.be/d-si3y2UXw4
Didn’t watch the vid but I bought 2 bantams for jigs and living up north I later thought to myself damn this thing will be cold early and late in the year.

Brass gears, DEFINITELY getting a 7 gear ratio for my 7’3mh poison adrena for chatterbaits/spinnerbaits. Possibly a 8 gear ratio, depending on how that gun metal finish looks on a green 893 nrx

When the Bantam came out, people complained that the line guide was too close to the spool, affecting casting distance. Looking at this new Metanium, looks like the line guide is much closer to the spool compared to the 16 Met MGL. Makes me wondering if this new Met will actually outperform our old Met mgls. Big praise for going to brass gears, but will it actually be an upgrade in performance? We'll see!
My concern as well. There is tons of space in the nose, move the line guide out near the front. Otherwise it looks like how I pictured the Daiwa Z1016 we have been clamoring for for years. I want...

But the spool is narrower which results in smaller angles. I'm pretty confident that we will see a great performance...

When compared to the Bantam, the MET is a little longer and a little narrower. The line guide might be a little further forward based on what I could see having it in my hand. I didn't have a Bantam to compare side by side. Japan model will have a 70 size spool. The US model will have a 150 size spool (deeper).

You're all welcome for helping to push the brass gearing ;)

I wonder how the new Metanium will hold up in the salt. The old one had zero issues

Bantam..

How do you think frame dimensions compared to a Corado 70

Since the Curado 70 is discontinued, I don't know of any new 70 size reels for the US market to replace it as of yet, if ever?

I would get a JDM 70 Matanium to replace my Currado 70s

The Antares 70 A is more money than I want to spend per reel.. weighing in at 7.8 ounces... heavier than I would like.

This reel is going to be dynamite for sure. I didn't see any problems with casting on the bantam mgl what so ever. I just wish they would make the handle lengths all the same size though for every gear ratio.

The Curado 70 is smaller in profile, but maybe the same width overall. I didn't do a side by side and I do not have specs for dimensions. It is based on the Bantam but with some slight changes as I described earlier. They both feel small in my hand. I wear a size large glove if that gives you a better idea of sizing.

New MET should be good to go in salt. Like any of our other reels, it still needs to be maintained when used in salt.

I'm pretty sure the XG will have the 95mm handle like the previous MET. I believe current Bantam handles are 84mm for all gear ratios. I would need to double check that next week when the engineer is back.

He’s now a full Shimano/G Loomis Pro
So, has he given up the Enigma rods that he helped design? I'm aware that he's used Met reels for a number of years, but he got a bunch of $ to leave Megabass for the start up rod company. I haven't used or kept up with Enigma rods, so just curious...

EDIT: found an article that says just that...

My XG Bantam handle is definitely longer than my HG. Pretty sure it is 90mm.
