I heard they're not producing custom parts anymore, instead, they're into selling rods and reels now. Is anybody even buying them?

I thought about it, but the appeal of a Doyo with a ZPi spool kinda made me iffy. Honestly, a Lews cast just as good for $150 in my eyes. It's not the same as a Daiwa with a ZPi spool. I'm curious as to who may have dipped into the pot myself.

It's like dating a fat girl or riding a moped ....sure, it might end up being fun, but nobody wants their friends to see them doing it!

I don't see it even being "fun". We already have our quality Made in Japan reels that have access to ZPI spools for almost 20 years. Why spend $300 on a Doyo reel, when you can get a ZPI spool for $100, and keep on using quality frames with smooth long lasting performance from Shimano/Daiwa/MB. Like, to whom is ZPI trying to sell their reels to? Your average joe using a Fuego from his local Walmart has never even heard of ZPI. The more hardcore crew associates ZPI with top quality Made in Japan stuff. Just like Abu, there's simply no way a Doyo made $300 reels will sell more than a Japan made reel from Shimano/Daiwa, and Abu is a well renown brand, not like ZPI. I think ZPI strategy is stupid.

Seems bizarre to abandon a very well established, cult-like following, and high margin niche business model to try to compete with major players in general manufacturing of reels in a very competitive and much lower margin space.

Ask Bryan about the very first one that came across his work bench at The Tackle Trap... ](*,)

I'm also out and perplexed at the choice to move away from their legendary product line. The their latest PG spool for Daiwa is an absolute masterpiece... I stocked up

Just shy of a full blown train wreck is what the first one was.

A guide friend from Florida bought one to check out. Upon receiving the reel he notices the line guide would not travel. It was sent to me, and the pictures tell the story. Missing parts, under lubed, hot sauce grease, not even ZPI bearings!

ZPI is most likely going back to producing custom parts by early 2021 :laugh1:

There is simply no way they're making bank on these.

Maybe they're hoping to make enough from selling those reels to subsidize their real business.
