Repainting a reel...

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Repainting a reel...

Post by Slazmo » Fri Jun 14, 2019 12:53 am

I know there are plenty of "reel pimpers" out there and one of the best imho is Igor Zacchi on IG, his work is flawless...

I wanted to give a home job a go as I've seen mixed results with people pimping reels and have seen some shoddy work too - people come in and out of the trade here like it's going out of fashion...

I got this Curado D PV from a gent who'd purchased it over in California, and had subsequently moved to Australia's Northern Queensland and they had a lot of use, with what seemed to me when I got them Zero self maintenance or professional service in all that time...

This Curado came to me part of a 3 set (CU BSF, B & D) and the other two were exactly the same in desperate need of service first, this particular reel got a new handle shaft and a couple of few small parts and that was basically all it needed to get to running order. The picture that you see I basically put a new Chinese manufactured swept 120mm handle on and that's basically where it sat at for a while.

Paint corrosion 2

The paint was in overall good condition however there were subterranean corrosion areas (thumb bar and level wind mostly) and as in the above photo you can see it wasn't pretty but hadn't affected the frame material at all - just bubbled the paint upwards. The corrosion was halted with lanolin however I wasn't happy using the reel in salt water due to the exposed aluminium; as more corrosion could /would occur.

I stripped back the reel with Norglass Orange Peel paint stripper which took about 4 attempts to get all of it off, true testament to shimano's paint of that vintage, as it was so hard to get off with a marine grade paint stripper. The paint and primer they used is very thin however very very strong and resistant to the paint stripper I was recommended by a very well established Australian company. I found out the hard way I guess... We don't have places that sell great one treatment aircraft grade strippers etc...

Once I got the paint off and exposed all of the frame etc (by carefully scraping off all remaining tenacious paint by hand), I scuffed back the frame with a 3M Scotch pad to give some keying effect and washed the frame down with white vinegar which should acid treat / gently etch the aluminium, then onto wax and grease remover any residue there after for priming.

At this point, I used marine grade Moeller Yellow Zinc Phosphate modified epoxy primer which is meant for outboard sterndrives and outboard motors which will be the sacrificial element base if there is any further corrosion to occur / try it's luck, this will halt it.

* I did notice a few sticky uppy bits, so I will hit the surface to smooth out before moving forward to the next step.

After primer curing is to apply the Moeller Mercury Phantom Black top coat in a few very fine controlled spray passes, to achieve thickness and opacity. Once that is cured, the next step is for the Moeller Clear Coat which is UV stable and extremely hard, so hoping this should keep the reel in general good knick and strong enough to withstand day to day use and ward off future corrosion...

When the next step is done I'll throw a few pictures up.

Hopefully should inspire some to do their own?

Bumblebee themed? Like the yellow Pixy or TDZ PO.

Once this is complete, you can start on another transformer!

Keep us posted, looks good so far!

This is just the undercoat primer mate, not sure if I could do a yellow reel ;)

Funny you talk about the PO... One just came up for sale, a red one. A guy on my FB... My mouth agape for a moment while I absorbed the price...

Mowe a few more lawns and shovel a few more driveways, and you will have that $700 lump sum in no time

Few lawns for that PO... Don't forget we don't get snow over here on the Gold Coast...

But on a brighter note the rains have come so its halted my progress to a stop, till the humidity drops...

Wow looks awesome, watching with great anticipation. I have a few reels that could do with this. Although the paint is only microns thick are you anticipating having to remove it to fit it back together? Say where the side plates butt up to the frame or where the lower pinion bearing sits in the frame. They really were a well put together reel the old Curados.

I've taken into consideration some of the wear / corrosion over the time and painted it internally (gear plate side only) lightly, thus to mitigate further corrosion as there is / was some where the clutch parts rested on this side...

While some areas are painted I will have to scratch it back / polish the surface to remove the zinc primer.

Otherwise I'm foreseeing some gain in tolerance especially the bearing cups - even if so fine it will help as I'd appreciate a more force fit than slip in / fall out fit.

The weather has been more than excellent over the week however work commits me to other persuits than completing this reel. The weekend "Thurs, Frid & Sat" should see me gain some ground finishing the top coat for the final clear.

Well it's cold... Overcast and slightly windy (28km/h - Sthly, 19 degrees and 71% humidity) but I got sick of looking at the parts on the rack while on my day off... Yesterday was a stunning day which I could've done it all without a worry but at work naturally - but I pressed on today...

I hit them with a couple light coats of what I believed to be Phantom Black - but on the first squirt... "Oh my"... I remember now that I wanted a colour that was near enough gunmetal and with a metallic fleck. I went back and read through my notes and I actually did a poll on the colour and this is what most wanted , little to my remembering of choosing this colour. My next reel most likely the Calais DC I will strip down the frame and paint it the phantom black - unsure what to do with the chrome that's peeling off...

Justifiably the paint isn't as fine as it would come out of an airbrush due to the painter using thinners to control the flow rate and thickness of paint, the paint that has been applied has gone down easy enough and some what smooth enough to pass as acceptable. While it's not going to pass the highest of critics it's certainly within the realm of an everyday person like myself and will justifiably keep the reel from breaking out into further spells of corrosion.

Now all that is needed for the next step is to allow the top colour coat to completely cure, knock off any sticking up bits and to apply some very fine top coat clear which will protect the paint from any environmental effects such as hand sweat and oils including skin acids.

When the reel is completely finished with the top coat I'll get on to rebuilding the reel and onto measuring for tolerance loss with the gain of paint in certain areas and key locations, this is where I will find either removing or leaving some paint that will protect what was once unprotected metal areas to avoid further future corrosion. And as I mentioned before I may actually gain tolerance benefits from this layer of primer / paint in some locations including bearing cups and the clutch area.
