Repainting a reel...

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Two blasts of the clear on... Give that some time to cure...

I've airbrushed a few and never again. The tolerances are tight on a lot of our newer reels and the masking takes a long time to do it right. Here's a blue Metanium I did for myself. I did the whole reel this color with black accents. I cheated and used an airbrush and good automotive 2 part clear coat. And I have access to all the parts I could ever need ;)

Image

My only advice is make sure all the parts fit correctly like side plates to frame, level wind protector, etc. Be ready to sand parts where the clear or paint is slightly too thick. Be patient

Thanks for the tip, it would be nice to have all the gear to do it properly however it's time and space I don't have ultimately...

Did you strip back the frame to metal, as I can see the Metanium logo, or did you simply replace it?

Ive removed the tape over the cast control knob bearing structure, the paint is pretty thin, not OEM thin but I'm happy with the thickness and hold its achieved.

Ill let it cure some more today and start on it this afternoon.

Edit just did a quick test fit... Every part bar the spool turn key fits first go thankfully, wo will take the top clear off the perimeter of it.

And that's me done. Not too many drama's on the rebuilding phase, did carefully shave out some areas however I think I've still got more paint on the inner surfaces of the spool entry and inner gearbox than factory.

Everything internally did well also, even with the slight overspray - very positive clutch action now.

Thanks mate. I hope to see more of this rather than just the factory finished reels. I know people over in the States & elsewhere have access to some pretty good refinishing products and awesome skill sets.

Nice work! Looks really good and not over the top. Should match well wirh many rods.

Let us know how the finish holds up over time and how everything functions once you use it

Im not really that guy who needs thing's to match up rod and reel per se, I'm more on functionality and purpose over all thing's else.

Its the same performance wise as was before - the level wind has tightened up and so has the rest of the reel thankfully.

Durability well its paint meant for the marine environment outboards and stern drives so it's got some good reviews from those that repaint them, in hands we'll just have to see in time. I'm pretty careful with my reels though.

I use a candy paint of a very carefully prepped frame and side plate so the letters and numbers come through. Then it's being careful with the clear coat application. I did a red one too for a good friend that fishes the FLW Tour. I don't have any pics on my phone of the blue reel. Here's the red one but with the terrible office lighting pics. So imagine this same look but the reel is blue. I used the same black and sliver parts to accent the rest of the reel. All stock Shimano parts used.

Looks almost like a rustic orange but regardless it is snazzy!

It's the light in the office. It makes it look different than it does outside. I didn't do any editing to the pics to adjust it since those pics were just for my buddy. In person its red with no orange look to it.
