I have a RCS 1016 spool in mine and am really happy with it. It casts 1/4 oz. Pop R's as well as the og 103 spool without the worry. Have not tried a ZPI spool so I can't compare.

I picked up a steez 103hl recently and before I bought it I found that most people said it was good for baits 1/4 oz and lighter only. And that the steez 100h was the one to get for lures 1/4-1oz. ...

I have never heard that description of the Steez 103 (HL=JDM version) (HLA=US domestic version). I have both versions and other than some labeling, the reels are identical. I also have a Steez 100HLA. "1/4 oz and lighter" would indicate a finesse reel and none of the earlier TT reviews indicated that. In fact, in one review, a double digit bass was 'winched' out of a mat using the 103 without any issue using a jig that I am sure was more than 1/4 oz.

My 103HLA has just come out of storage to pair with a Gan Craft Scarface and I took it out to my "casting" park this morning to see how the combination worked before taking it 'on the water'. I was casting a 1/2 oz. plug 70-80 feet with the stock 103HLA spool and a moderate 'flicking' cast. The brakes were set to 3. I likely could have cast further, but I am only interested in performance with moderate effort due to issues with my right wrist.

I had planned to also test the 103HLA with 100HLA and Steez HLC spools, but the performance with the stock spool on the Gan Craft is what I am looking for, so I might skip that comparison. OBW, I have a Steez 1016SB G1 spool in the 100HLA and the casting performance is great, even better than with the HLC spool.

All of my OG Steez reels were purchased in 2007/2008 and fished extensively until recently (Hello Steez SV TW ) and the reels have experienced no loss of performance, after that extensive use, over the years.

Last weekend,I brought the 100HLA out of storage to use for four days at Clear Lake last weekend. It was paired with a MB Black Jungle F5-71XBJ for topwater, chatterbait and spinnerbait. The combination worked well and will likely be in regular use, the same as I anticipate the 103HLA/Scarface combination for cranking.

Has anyone put an sv103 spool in the steez 103hl? How would it be compared to the zillion sv tw spool? Just curious because it's actually in stock.

Is yours the rcs 1016 or the 1016 G1?

That spool will fit. I would assume the new 1016G1 is a lighter assembly thank the RCS, but I would also assume that the inductor and spring combination on the new spill yield different performance. But. I don't have either spool so the performance differences are all guesswork from me...

I know you can swap different spools to get different results and is them for different techniques. I've found a lot of information on other steez models and people liking the zillion sv spool or the 1016 spool. I talked to Gary at tackle trap and he recommended the ZPI NRC-001PG spool. Does anyone here have experience with that spool?



Is there another spool that would be cheaper that I could swap in if I wanted to throw heavier lures or make the reel better all around when I don't plan on throwing light stuff? I see tackle trap has the sv103 spool and 100ha spool.



Or should I just start off slow with the 103h spool and get better at thumbing the spool? (I feel in pretty good at it right now but I think every thread I've found on the 103h talks about how wild the spool is)

That ZPI spool will do what you want and I have one in a steez.. I also have a 1016 (non G1 and G1 ) spool in a steez that will do what you want.
If you can't control the stock spool than you are asking for troubles with a better more sophisticated spool. Someone mention that you dial the reel in with the stock spool and I certainly agree with that.
What is your setup with the reel?
IMHO i wouldn't throw money at it, Id just learn what you have and go from there. The SV version of those spool recommended will do a lot but the G1 1012 or 1016 are absolutely great solutions to bridging the gap of both worlds..

Honestly,I have no experience with swapping spools, I just use stock reels. I picked up this one to play around with. I have it on a tatula elite AGS 7' M/MH rod (TAEL701MMHXB-ags) but I'm not sure if it's going to stay on that rod or move it to my 7'2" zillion MH (zil721mhrb). All depends on what I can cast with it. I was going to test it out yesterday but the wind was really bad and I spent most of my time controlling the boat for my dad and kids to fish. Still had a good day and they caught some fish.

I'm looking for a spool with both good casting distance and control for lures from 1/4-3/4 most likely. If the stock spool can do that once set up right with practice I'd be fine leaving the stock spool in it. Just wanted to play with this reel (maybe a carbon fiber handle and cork knobs)

I've been finding a lot of posts like this today though so maybe those of you who suggested using the stock spool and setting it right are right. I still wouldn't mind picking up a spool to play with though.

I had that rod and I sold it HOWEVER initially I wasn't getting what I knew my reel was capable of.
The reel is an SS SV with 7.9:1 gears tuned by Ian and I had a MB honeycomb spool in it. When i put a G1 spool in it I was like wow.
The taper of that rod is odd to me which is why I sold it. Good rod no doubt but takes some getting used to and the reel HAS to be set up right. I can attest to this from my personal experience and I have some pics to. I ended up throwing 3/8 riot bait mini jig on it in deep water, wacky rig fishing with it and I did do some jerk bait fishing with it. If i had to do it over from the start, I would just have gone with a G1 spool.. That spool on a brake setting of 3.0-3.5 in my experience, delivers.. Good Luck
