Daiwa Steez 103HL

I picked up a steez 103hl recently and before I bought it I found that most people said it was good for baits 1/4 oz and lighter only. And that the steez 100h was the one to get for lures 1/4-1oz.

I know you can swap different spools to get different results and is them for different techniques. I've found a lot of information on other steez models and people liking the zillion sv spool or the 1016 spool. I talked to Gary at tackle trap and he recommended the ZPI NRC-001PG spool. Does anyone here have experience with that spool?

Is there another spool that would be cheaper that I could swap in if I wanted to throw heavier lures or make the reel better all around when I don't plan on throwing light stuff? I see tackle trap has the sv103 spool and 100ha spool.

Or should I just start off slow with the 103h spool and get better at thumbing the spool? (I feel in pretty good at it right now but I think every thread I've found on the 103h talks about how wild the spool is)

Thank you for your time.

Are you talking about the Steez SV103, or the older non SV version? I'm assuming the old, as the SV version will throw just about whatever you want. If it were me (old reel), I'd opt for the Zillion SV TW spool. It's fairly inexpensive, and very versatile.

Agreed, the Zillion SV1016 is a solid spool for heavier line/lures. The stock spool you gave is a little fast shop if you haven't used it yet, crank the brakes to max and work down from there. That'll save you a lot of line picking.

aren't ZPI NRC-001PG spools very fast? i wouldn't use them in an OG steez with its weak magnets.

Yes, old non sv steez 103hl. Do you know where to buy one of those spools? Tackle trap had them cheap but looks like they are out of stock and discontinued.

I have a zillion sv tw, I guess I could at least try the spool in the steez. Do you know where I can buy another zillion spool? I've found them online but the places that had then wanted as much as the Zpi spool.

The spool that's in it right now is very fast too. I believe it's the 103h r+ spool. The one with all the dimples.

I think I'll just look for the zillion sv spool some more.

Did Gary or Brian say the spool was discontinued? I wouldn't think so. I'm sure you can call and order. They place parts orders regularly. You can also post a wanted thread in the classifieds. You could also try the SV103 spool, though the Zillion spool is a little nicer.

No, I thought I read that in a forum somewhere. I'll ask Gary. I might be mistaken.

I'll open it up when I get a chance, but the 103h is supposed to have the r+ right?

Yea the original R+ is way too fast for the og steez. Same with the R spools. Personally, the ZPI RC spool, SLP1010, FX68 spools, RCS1016 original or the G1 series would be my pick if casting range is needed. If not, any of the SV spools in a steez are pretty good.

Well looks like I'm going to have to start posting on this forum more so I can start a post in the classified section to find a zillion sv tw spool. I contacted tackletrap and they have some on order with no expected delivery date so at least they aren't discontinued yet. If anyone happens to know of another place to buy one please let me know. Thanks
