Budget salt water casting reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Budget salt water casting reel

Post by 1nutinthewater » Fri Apr 05, 2019 12:49 pm

Looking to buy budget saltwater CASTING reel to use on 1-3# surf perch. Will mostly throw 1/2-3/4 oz.

It will take a beating as I will also use it in the rocks so I do not wish to spend a few hundred dollars on it. Just bought a pflueger president as a spinning throw away sale water reel.

Recommendations on cheapo caster?

I purchased some Quantum Vapor baitcasters on ebay (auctions) for salt water / inshore fishing. Price approx. 60-70 usd each. So far quite happy with the reels.

I'd go with an Abu Winch or variation and just wash it thoroughly after each time out and break it down after season. There's a gen 4 revo winch on the other site for cheap.

SLX. Shimano’s are real easy to maintain, which is very important for a saltwater reel. Have no experience with that reel, but hear they are good casters that feel solid.

Budget can be a relative word, now having said that, the Tranx 200 has been touted as the perfect bay rod here in San Diego for the local spotties and halibut. I've seen BNIB reels going for as low as $175...

Fuego or spend a little more and get a coastal tws. My original type r tatula is still going strong in the salt as well.

I have a pair of the original Tatula's that have been my workhorses for salmon and steelhead for the last 5 years without any problem maybe I will retire one to the salt.

I have one type r and a tatula sv that I have been pleased with in the salt, though the type r is probably my favorite, its not as smooth now since its a 8.1 but it still gets the job done.
