2019 Steez CT SV and 2019 Alpha CT SV
Does anyone know what type of gears (brass vs aluminum) are going to be in these new reels?
Re: 2019 Steez CT SV and 2019 Alpha CT SV
Aluminum main and brass pinion in the steez and brass main and pinion in the alphas.

Just to clarify the reel is the same size as all the other alohas but just has a smaller 70 size spool?
Re: 2019 Steez CT SV and 2019 Alpha CT SV
Yes, spacers to reduce the inner hub to fit a 30mm spool. Also I have heard there are some internal discrepancies, like pinion design. Mainly any differences are to accommodate the new smaller spool.Real Pudd legend wrote:Just to clarify the reel is the same size as all the other alohas but just has a smaller 70 size spool?

Yes identical size to all previous alphas with differences being a new pinion gear design with longer pinion shaft, spacers, narrow span level wind and different set plate design on the palm side. The main shaft is a different design as well but could be used in other alphas reels as an upgrade, it is ported and internally threaded so the handle attached similarly to how the steez does.Real Pudd legend wrote:Just to clarify the reel is the same size as all the other alohas but just has a smaller 70 size spool?

Re: 2019 Steez CT SV and 2019 Alpha CT SV
I've read here on TT that reels with brass main gears tend to be a tad smoother than reels with aluminum gears, but the brass gears add weight. Has the Steez always used an aluminum main gear? If this is true, I'm assuming Daiwa does this to keep the weight down.
Re: 2019 Steez CT SV and 2019 Alpha CT SV
Not necessarily are smoother but the tend to stay smoother over time. The steez ct is an exceptionally smooth reel regardless of the gear material, however if it will stay that way is yet to be seen. I think a lot of the brass gear swap and smoothness talk has been the issue of "gear buzz" in the aluminum MM gears in the metanium. Many have resorted to swapping to the brass curado K main gear with metanium pinion (which is brass) to restore smoothness.
My theory is the issues lies more with what I'll call sensitivity of the MM gear design than just the material. MM has to be so precise that any tolerance variation in the gears or alignment in any part of the reel will be felt in the mesh of MM gears. I've felt some that were "butter" and I've felt some that were "buzz" in both brass and aluminum configuration. Also being so precise means that any deflection of gear geometry under load (especially heavy loads like flipping techniques) can potentially get the gears out of perfect alignment and mar the gears so a buzz can be felt. They added an extra bearing to the main shaft on the MM shimano's to help with keeping everything aligned but maybe it's not enough?
Weight is a big reason for aluminum gears, the USDM steez sv (non t-wing) 8.1 model had brass gears and was designed more for heavier techniques like pitching and flipping. But that was a 6.4oz reel compared to the 5.8oz aluminum geared 6.3 version of the same reel.

Is this new Alpha ct sv a finesse reel ?

Most certainly and pairs up well with my Daiwa Black Label PF 701MFB Medium 7' (1/8-5/8) with 8-10 lb test it heaves wacky and 1/16 oz headed-2.5” Ned rig effortlessly and about 15 yds further then my 105sv on same rod.
I think the narrower lighter spool helps with that.

How does the Alpha CT SV compare to an alphas air or an alphas/sol reel with a cosugi works spool in it?
Thanks for the epiphany captain obvious

Alphas air will cast lighter lures with more control than the ct but its very close to the cosugi spool with lightweights even though the cosugi (with air bfs bearing) is 2g lighter than the ct spool with bearing. The small 30mm diameter really starts up easily.spencerinstl wrote: ↑Fri Apr 19, 2019 5:41 amHow does the Alpha CT SV compare to an alphas air or an alphas/sol reel with a cosugi works spool in it?

Cool, thanks for the reply. Was just wondering what advantage the alphas ct sv had. I own several pixy's, alphas or sol with cosugi, a couple of sv 105, a couple of alphas air, and an alphas with a alphas air stream custom spool in it.ss30378 wrote: ↑Sat Apr 20, 2019 6:59 pmAlphas air will cast lighter lures with more control than the ct but its very close to the cosugi spool with lightweights even though the cosugi (with air bfs bearing) is 2g lighter than the ct spool with bearing. I have many of those same setups and i would describe it as cosugi lightweight capability, sv105 control but i actually get better distance with the ct than the sv105. Its a fun spool.spencerinstl wrote: ↑Sat Apr 20, 2019 7:06 pmCool, thanks for the reply. Was just wondering what advantage the alphas ct sv had. Guess I will have to find out for myself.
