1000 size shimanos

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

1000 size shimanos

Post by BRONZEBACK32 » Mon Mar 04, 2019 11:33 pm

I've been using 2500 size reels forever except for ice fishing (500 size)

I decided to try out a 1000 size stella FJ and its amazing, super light, its like using a aldabaran but a spinning reel.

I put some Sunline Xplasma 10lb on it, it took the whole 165 yard spool  I should have used backing but
was in a hurry.

Threw the Stella on a Couquest 842 and the balance is excellent, its like pure finesse power combo.

Anyone else use the 1000 size shimano reels?

Thats normally the size I use for bass fishing. I find the 1000 size holds more than enough line for my fishing needs.
I use the 500 for crappie and other smaller fish.
2500/3000 for larger fish like catfish or stripers.

Just because I like going lighter, but yes, I use a Shimano Stradic 1000FH for schoolie bass fishing on a medium 7'3" rod.
Why is there a concerted effort of hate? And why is it allowed?

Yes I have the 1000FJ and it’s one smooth reel. Holds plenty of line that’s for sure

I've heard they don't cast as well as the 2500/3000 because of spool diameter, but I have also heard there is
no difference because the smaller line coils of a 1000 goes through rod guides easier causing less friction...

I have Stradic 1000FKs and a Stella C2000S and there is no discernible difference in casting distance with braid. The 1000 size is great for a light estuary work and Australian bass.

I wish I had 1000's sometimes, especially for my 6'Light rod (has a Stradic Ci4+2500 FA). I have heard all kinds of positives and negatives concerning either, the reason I picked 2500's was because of larger gears (should survive longer fighting fish), better line management (less wind knots especially), supposed longer casting (debatable, I have heard the small coils pass through easier but also heard more smaller coils cause more friction), etc.

I will be eventually adding a 1000 size spinning reel, really enjoy the compact size and match with panfish style rods. I don't think there is a major change between either, just some very small advantages. I find that one works in the other's place just about fine when switching between 1000-2500. Not sure about larger 3000-4000 reels in comparison to a 1000 size.

I sometimes wish Shimano would bring back the 2000 size, in addition to the current options.

I use a Stella 1000 FE on a NRX 822DSR. Super light and balances great!

Yes sir and like you I've used about every Shimano size iterations over the years from 1000-4000. All kinds of early Stradics, Stradic Ci 4 (A and B), Sustains etc Model sizes depending on where I was at with my smallmouth fishing. I suspect I've landed back to where I began with my finesse fishing back to the late 80's and the Stella FJ 1000's will suit me just fine across the board. Light braids that have only gotten better over the last 15 years that make spiders jealous but test greater than their box strengths have greatly helped my return.
Team flannel, overtime and promotion.

I use 2 stradic 1000's for trout fishing only. I would never use anything heavier than 6lb test diameter line on them. They balance almost perfectly with a 6'7 G-loomis trout rod.

I think there are some JDM models that might fit that bill, might not be listed as a 2000 though.

Used the combo today and loved it.

Ended up catching 7 rainbow trout, nothing big but better then nothing :big grin:

This combo is so light it blows my mind, just gonna take a guess and say it weighs a little above 9 ounces...
