Stop with the "30lb max drag" Nonsense!

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Stop with the "30lb max drag" Nonsense!

What fresh/inshore game would require anywhere close to 30lbs of drag...I don't know.

But at 40:00, it's clear this Revo Beast stops well short of their advertised 30lbs drag: https://youtu.be/3mpv8GiNdvQ?t=2438

It's marketing bullshit, nothing more. It's aimed at the "more and bigger must be better" mentality.

When it comes to drag on a freshwater application, I'll take absolute smoothness over strength all day every day.

I will say this in Abu's defense: When Abu drag is locked down, it's locked down. I can't recall a single time, that when the drag was locked down, it was LOCKED DOWN. That's both spinning and baitcasting, round and low profile. I've had Daiwa drags slip at unfortunate time, equaling lost fish.

Definitely this. That revo beast is just as sweet a reel at 20lbs of max drag...and if it can perform smoothly up to 9/10lbs no one using it will ever complain. But you print "30lbs" on the box, get ready for some blowback lol.

Sure, 30lbs. Lock it down, then go ahead and order some extra roller clutch bearings. Youre gonna need them.

Yea I do find it odd on big round reels for giant flathead and blue catfish typically like a Tekota,Abu, or Calcutta 15 or 20 lbs of drag is considered strong and even conventional satlwater reels are in this range yet we need more drag for a 3 lb bass than they need for a 50 lb catfish. I get that for a bass you are trying to pull them straight out of cover but still....

How much force can a spool shaft that is maybe 3 - 5 mm in diameter supposed to withstand and maintain it’s alignment ? Probably not 30 lbs ...
