Daiwa TD-X 103p, TD-Z?
Daiwa TD-X 103p, TD-Z?
I fish with a friend who said he has a mint TD-X 103 for sale, I told him to bring it by and let me take a look. It's definitely a TD-X but it's got the TD-Z body and frame. Gold spool and cc Cap and what appears to be cheaper controls. Can someone give me some info on this reel...and what I should offer him. It's brand new...
Never really got into the Xs and don't know to much about them but I was expecting a traditional looking X not one that looked like the Z.

Do the internals compare to the TD-z? I was thinking of giving him $125 He also has a 105 version of this same reel, I think he wants to trade a Zillion for it.

The temptation to build them up a little and have custom painted is ever present!
Re: Daiwa TD-X 103p, TD-Z?
There were 3 levels of TD's: TDS, TDX, and TDZ. TDSs were the cheaper version listed for about $150, TDXs were a tournament favorite for years listed for about $200. The TDZ was the cream of the crop at a list of $350. As you go thru the reels they get more bearing with the TDZ having magnesium frame. The TDZ priced at $350 was pretty expensive, but worth every penny. I remember looking at the Cabela's catalog and debating weather to get a TDS or TDX, not way I would pay $350 for a reel. I hope someone with more info can correct my memory and add additional info as needed.

I've seen a lot of TD-Xs but until now have never seen one that looked exactly like the TD-Z...he's got the 103 and 105 and they look exactly like a TD-Z.

not sure but I think the Japan model was the same as the tdz minus some bearings.

I'll buy the 103 but do you think it worth a OG Zillion for the 105h TD-X?

Re: Daiwa TD-X 103p, TD-Z?
JDM TD-X was magnesium and pretty much a TD-Z minus some bearings, non-clicking cast control cap, non-metal drag star, different ported aluminum spool, among a few other minor differences. Very good reel as is or could be upgraded pretty easily to get pretty much TD-Z performance. They originally retailed for around $250-$300 depending on the exchange rate. I would definitely go for the 103. As far as trading the Zillion for the 105, that really depends on the condition of the Zillion and what you want/need more. The Zillion is a known workhorse, where the TD-X 105 is less of a brute and more of a finessey reel.
