TD-Z 103h spool in T3

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

TD-Z 103h spool in T3

Post by Moosehead » Sat Jul 14, 2018 8:51 pm

I have a TD-Z 105h and I put a R+ spool in it and really like it, well I was thinking about putting a R+ spool in my 103h and moving that spool to my T3 ballistic. The ballistic has been enhanced and I really like it and use it as my all around reel, the thought of moving it kinda justifies buying the R+ spool for my TD-Z. A couple of guys told my it would be uncontrollable in the T3. My reels are at my camp so I can't make the field try till a few days and by that time the R+ spool could sell. The guy at superior tackle won't hold it for me. Any help would be be appreciated.

I'd buy the spool personally.

R+ spools are always worth picking up. You might have to move some shims in the T3 for proper fitment of the 103 spool.

The tdz spools don't simply drop into the T3's without any issues.
You can mess around with removing shims on the palming side plate, however the end result is not great in my view.
The spool is not centered correctly, this does have an influence with the braking dynamics
This applies to the tdz and steez spools
Not saying it does not work but the negatives outway the positives in my opinion.
By changing the handle side spool bearing to one with a reduced width remedies the problem and the spool orientation is corrected.
Too much hassle, there are so many other simple t3 spool options.

I’m running a steez spool in one of mine. It needed a little shimming but not a big deal.

Would one from a steez 100h work? I have a spare lying around here somewhere, it's black with little "white" dimples

If you change the handle side bearing to one with a reduced width ,problem is solved
Spool is now centered and inductor cup sits in correct position inside mag race.
Red spool is stock bearing, notice how spool is offset towards palming plate
This is the case with tdz and steez spools

I haven't try to fit TD-Z 105H into Zillion SVTW reel. On T3MX reel, 105H spool fit in but won't spin freely. spool still tight even after I loosen tension cap all the way out.

well, found the real issue on why TD-Z spool seem tight on T3 or Zillion svtw, stopper behind spool bearing are way taller than t3 & zillion spool

Image

So I've replace that 5x11x4 spool bearing with Calcutta 400 bushing (5x11x3.5) to see if it's solve the issue

and yeah, problem solve \:D/

Just some update, I've replaced 5x11x3 bushing with 5x11x4 HH air bfs bearing (red color) on 105h spool today, and spool works on T3 & zillion svtw. Checked the distance of shaft end to bearing (refer A in my previous post), its 5.++mm. This is probably because HH air bfs bearing is smaller in size, seat in its alum housing
