How fast is too fast?

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Doesn't take much to convert to IVCB braking. :big grin:
New spool, new sideplate. Or if removable take off the magnetic wheel on spool and basic centrifugal brakes to replace with the IVCB setup. Then add the raceway for IVCB to sideplate after removing the magnets and original centrifugal raceway.

No idea why they went with the weaker braking system, that was an initial complaint of the Rockets, that they didn't have the Premier's brake system for $300. Also the new AL-F got 2 centrifugal pins and magnets, if they had added the IVCB I honestly might have gotten an Abu again...

I understand... haha. In all honesty, I am not going to hate on the AL-F yet, plenty of Japanese anglers enjoy the 2 pin braking with linear mags. I know the ALX had a 12 gram something spool WITH bearing, so if you could control that spool it really should be a finesse caster. Does TackleTour have plans to test the newer MGX2 or have they already and I missed it???

I haven't spoken to Abu about that reel. It took all Spring to get through the Revo4 lineup, and now there are the ICAST introductions to consider, so who knows... ](*,)

Yes!

G3-Winch/S/SX/STX/Rocket/Beast are all doable and stock spool is retained.

Hardest part is the spool mod, Rest is simple parts swappin............. The spool needs a grove for the brake weight holder.

Where are you getting your parts? I have a project to convert a revo3 IB from a Doyo dual bake to the externally adjustable centrifugal. I already have the spool as part of a Deez kit for the reel. I just need the adjustable centrifugal race part to replace the fixed race and adjustable mag that came factory.

Hell, just buy an ALX, or get the JDM offering for the brass gears.

That SX with IVCB is pretty cool, never seen anything like that before. An ALX with the MGX2 style braking would be a reel I would like to try. Hell if the new AL-F is convertible maybe I will try another ABU after all!!! Still thinking the Premier would be a cool reel with the lighter spool it has.

The new Rocket has some internal changes to the spool shaft and pinion gear. The spool shaft is now long extending all the way to the tension cap, similar to how the old Abu 6500C3 had them and the Shimano Calcuttas etc.
Wonder why they would go to this design?
Also now the pinion gear is much longer. The pinion gear is no longer supported on the secondary shaft that connects to the spool shaft. Instead the pinion gear end is longer, extends all the way to the bearing in the spool cap (under star drag). So this bearing ID is of course now much larger to accommodate the pinion gear. I can surmise the advantages of this. Maybe this is the change in the spool shaft design reason. This follows the new pinion gear design and support?
I can post the pictures, but haven't figured out how to do this here!
