Windy City wrote:I received mt Ryoga from Japan on Sunday. Took it out of the box and cranked the handle and was a little disappointed. It doesn't freewheel worth a crap and it feels like a gear shaft is bent or something. With each turn their is a disconcerting tick and bump. Maybe it is an isolated case but at the moment I am in no way a fan.

I would like to send it to Gary at TT for a once over and an opinion of why it seems so lackluster.
The handle not free wheeling is likely due to the gears being a bit tight. Both my LIN 10s were that way when new and I was taken aback until I was informed that is normal for the Ryoga platform and that It will loosen up in time. If you are feeling a tick in the handle as you turn it and this tick is felt in the same location with each revolution then there is something wrong with the main gear. It could be as simple as a small peice of debris on the gear or rough edge left from the tooling. Returning the reel or sending it off to be looked at for a 2nd opinion is smart. Good luck.

Good to know that it may break in a bit. I wasn't blown away with the "freewheel" either BUT it casts like a dream so I dont really care when it doesnt perform something its not made to do. Hopefully the ticking you are experiencing is a simple fix, I have nothing like that with mine.

I found it interesting in the comments him and another guy(also from Asia I think?) were both saying how lately all the daiwa reels seem to get shipped out bone dry, whereas here in USA people are saying the new daiwas seem over lubed & over greased?

I sent the Ryoga off to Gary at TT. Once received I am sure he can share his views. I assume it is a localized assembly issue as I have never bought a Daiwa reel I wasn't happy with. Either way I will have the pro go through it, straighten it out, and maybe improve it!

free spinning the handle doesn't mean anything. my black max free spins much longer than my original ryoga that i own for years. i let you guess which reel is better :o

the tolerances are so tight on on this reel that it simply cannot spin for very long. also, the heavier the handle+knobs, the longer it will free spin.

New Japanese video up of the Ryoga being semi-tested on the water, along with the bantam. Cool video, unfortunately it's all in Japanese. You can definitely make out how impressed he is by its smoothness.
Maybe someone can translate?

@9:56 he goofs around and throws an A-rig with 5 crankbaits on it  Works about as well as you think it would :D
His instagram link is in the description, he's got ALOT of awesome gear! (I'm especially fond of his piano black Met MGL =P~ )

I'm just waiting for the 1520 version to be released... :tired:

Also, it looks like Daiwa USA is only releasing 4 of the 8 possible configurations.
http://www.daiwa.com/us/contents/reels/ryoga/index.html

Only 1 of the 1016 variation:
1016H 6.3 - Right

And 3 of the 1520 variations:
1520CC 5.4- Right
1520H 6.3 - Right
1520L 6.3 - Left

Looks like I have to order from Japan...

I may have missed it then. I've been checking a few sites and it's not even listed on JPangler, JLS or JapanTackle, only the 1016 models.

I'll chime on on Ryoga handle free spin. My 1016H is in solid broken-in condition. Smooth as butter. Free spin? Not it's thing. My Fuego will win this test BIG time.
The Ryoga has tight fine gearing. Add grease and the some of these parts speak for themselves. Super retrieve feel, but not a free spin champion. Rather fish with my Ryoga than the Fuego...

The micro gear ushering into lower end models was a spot on comment. Reel companies need to offer something new in order to keep sales up... They are always looking for a new tech to offer and I bet money the next gen Zillions will offer the micro gears and the Steez style sideplate, hell they are doing it this year with the Zillion HD (sideplate that is). SV was a higher end technology when it started, right? Now it is available at under the $200 price point...
