Anyone use one compared to the HS?  What techniques do you use it for?  Thanks!

It's the same reel with 5.8:1 gears different color accents. It makes a really nice light crank bait reel...

Would it be okay for jerkbaits too or do you think too slow based on IPT?

It is just fine for jerk baits if you don't mind the slower IPT, but personally I prefer something with higher IPT. We have the 7.2:1 gear sets in stock in both RH and LH if you ultimately decide you want to speed it up.

Finesse cranks is its best purpose. It needs a spring or inductor swap though.

Why is that?

It would benefit from a stiffer spring, but the inductor length is fine. It’s a good caster out of the box but you can free it up a bit and gain some distance with a stiffer spring. It’s not as overly braked as the ss sv or sv 103 though. I was spooling it to the knot with 40lb braid and a 1/2oz red eye shad.

I almost wish it was an 8 speed for fishing smaller jerkbaits on the ML rod I use mine on. Overall, the 7.2 ratio (around 29 IPT) is perfect for about anything. I'd just get a gear swap if a good deal arises on the 5.8.

I agree 100% - we have done a bunch of spring mods on them at the shop too.

I also prefer faster reels for jerk bait fishing, an 8+ would be a nice option for this whole Pixy/Alphas/Sol/SV105 platform. I like the 7.2 for shallow cranking over the 5.8 too as I'm looking for a reaction strike and a faster retrieve ratio makes it easier to achieve that goal.

Just works better flat out for me. Sold a Revo Winch last season, moved my Tatula HD 7.3 for MH cranking, caught tons more fish. Keep an SS/SV 7.1 on a 7'Medium moderate, catch a ton of fish. Slowing down with a fast reel is easier than speeding up with a slow one for me. I would rather have a 6 ratio on the MH cranking, but for now the HD gets it done.

As we have said on a lot of threads on this reel before, the spool suddenly comes alive when you get up to 3/8 oz. The 7.2 ratio makes a great topwater/jerkbait reel. The smaller palming ability makes it nice for working jerkbaits. I can launch the Vision 110 and similar sized lures with the stock spool.

Where is a good place to get a stiffer spring without getting it from Japan? Thanks.

Call The Tackle Trap, they are in stock, but not on the website...

Can someone explain to me why we would stiffen the spring on the inductor on an Alphas SV rather than purchase a 2nd hand Magforce Z or V spool? It would seem to me like we are trying to un SV an SV spool. That low spool speed control is what they are known for and would be why one would purchase the reel in the 1st place instead of say, another non SV Alphas or Pixy. Am I off base on this?
