SS/SV 105 differences???

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

SS/SV 105 differences???

Post by DirtyD64 » Sun Dec 17, 2017 11:00 am

Is the SS/SV 105 much different than the 103??? I actually really like my SS/SV103, it is a 7.1, use it for light cranking and jerkbaits with 12lb fluorocarbon. Only issue is that it doesn't long cast as well as I would like. I also would rather it have brass gears.

I have seen the SS/SV105 on sale, and know it is an 8 speed. Are the gears brass in this reel or aluminum like the 103 (only reason I ask is because the 105 weighs slightly more)??? And does the SS/SV105 exhibit the heavy braking like the SS/SV103 or is it a little more free because of the shallow spool?

Not sure on the gears but the 105 spool will cast better than the SS/SV 103 spool. If casting distance is what you're after you can always pick up a used TD-Z gigas 103 spool for the SS/SV off ebay or something and make it an SS Magforce V 103.

If the 105 weighs more it likely has brass gears. Don't quote me on that. It's only an assumption, but I don't know where else the weight difference would come from. The spool is more shallow than the 103, so it shouldn't weigh more. I'm also assuming the 105 spool has a smaller rotor. I only say this because this is the case when comparing the 103 and 105 spools from the limited Steez SVs. I'm sure ebassfisher would know for certain about the gears.

I changed my mind. The weight difference isn't enough to warrant brass gears. 5.3 vs 5.4.

I got to this conclusion today also, after comparing the Steez SV 6.3 to 8.1 which I am pretty sure ARE aluminum gears vs brass (and they are 5.8oz vs 6.4), I realized the brass gears are going to be a good bit heavier than aluminum ones. I think the .1oz for the SS/SV differences is accounted by the different drag star and possibly a tad longer handle. Just wish I had a way to tell if the 105 was choked off feeling like the 103 is.

I only have one of each, but my SV105 had more braking (through the middle of the cast) than my SV103. Though braking was heavy, the SV105 backlashed easily. Not something you would think to be true, but it was. At least it was for me. A trip to Ian cured that problem.

EDIT: Oops. My bad. Take my statements back. Mine aren't the SS models.

Daiwa replaced the older style black ramp on my SV105 (Alphas SV) and even though it doesn't make sense, I swear it casts better now. Does anyone know if the Tatula SV has a "stickable" brake rotor or is the gap sealed on their design also? I have never had a single one stick, but just switch them out in case.
