Round vs Low Profile reels. Which one do you prefer?

Post by SSS » Tue Aug 08, 2017 12:34 pm

Which one do you enjoy using the most? My vote goes for a 100 size round reel. The only technique i dislike fishing on a round reel is jerkbaits.

I imagine most would go with low profile

I am a round reel guy but I fish more towards the heavy end of things with BC gear. Migrating back to almost all spinning for lighter techniques.

I like the best of both worlds, Conquest50. Lol. I prefer a smaller reel, like all the Shimano 50 series reels.

Low profile all the way. I fish a lot of jig and worm apps and sometimes I fish for many hours a day. LP reels are just more comfortable to me especially for longer durations

Round reels get my vote. Honestly, I'm not exactly sure why I keep going back to round reels. There are so many more low-profile reels available at a much cheaper price. Maybe it's the old fashion feel and quality.

I like the heritage of a round reel. Also i cant honestly tell the difference between round and low pro casting distance.

Comes down to hand size and perception of one reel to another looks and ergonomics.

I probably have more low profile than round. I love round reels though and if there were as many different models of round reels as there are LP I would have more round. My fishing does not call for anything over the 100 series Calcutta, of which I have two, and I can use the 50 size for most of my fishing. So I troll the auction sites for Ryogas and older Calcutta Conquests. A new 50 series in either of those would really get my blood pumping.

I LOVE my round reels, but I only have 2. If I had to choose all Round or all Low Profile, I'd go Low Profile. But I'm not about to give up my Roundies. Been patiently waiting for a Conquest 51 for awhile now to make it 3 8-)

Ive got a brand new in box CQ50, and its too pretty to fish. I have one that has a few, very few, little marks on it that I use to fish with. They really are great.

I enjoy both round and low profile.
The round reels are works of art.
The low profile are lighter and more versatile.
Both have a place

I prefer LP. My cheapest round reels aren't all that smooth or refined, but are excellent casters even in strong winds. The Morrums are nicer...and I like their build quality, but I don't think they can cast into a strong wind quite as well as the Black Max 1600C cheapies. Maybe the Morrums just need a little better adjusting?

Im pretty even split. I prefer round reels for moving baits, but hate them for bottom contact

Low profile for 95% of what I do, but the Calcutta Conquest is just too good to completely pass up on. I have it as my big swimbait reel but if that reel was cheaper and they had a domestic high gear version I would have put that reel on more rods.
