Higher end BFSish reel: Scorpion 70 BFS, Aldebaran 50, SS SV105, or ??
Higher end BFSish reel: Scorpion 70 BFS, Aldebaran 50, SS SV105, or ??
I am looking to move into a higher end reel for throwing lighter baits. Currently i use a Shimano 70 spooled with 6 or 8 lbs mono ( .01" dia) to throw small baits. Basically all i do is throw small baits anymore, as i just like fishing creeks and ponds alot right now. This performs great for 1/8 oz beetle spins, ned rigs, drop shots ect. However i am wanting to move up to the next level.
I also lover small reels. From my chronarch 50e, to my Curado 70, they just fit my hands prefect. The scorpion 70 bfg is identical to my curado 70, so i know i will like how it feels. Played with a Aldebaran and it was amazing, just not sure how light of baits it can handle stock.
I just got a Tatula CT and i am warming up to it. Its a little square for my tastes, but its my first magnetic brake reel, and i am liking it. Not sure what DIawas reels for light baits are, but i saw the SS SV 105 was set up for light baits, but not sure of the size of the reel.
Are there other reels i should look at? I think i am going to get a Tatula SV TS, mainly as i can get them for like 130$ right now. How does it handle lighter baits?

For the Tatula SV TW:
Heavy stuff in the beginning, BFSish stuff near the end.

Alphas platform of your choice, plus SV spool to fit said platform. Steez SV TW is another great option with stock spool or aftermarket options such as the SLP G1 1012 or new Zpi shallow spool.

To go off that, usually, it is cheaper to get the Alphas SV or SV105 instead of buying an Alphas and plugging in the SV spool.Hogsticker2 wrote:Alphas platform of your choice, plus SV spool to fit said platform. A lot of times, finding a good deal on a reel and changing out the spool and be financially smart. With the Alphas platform, just getting the SV version is usually best.

what is based off the alpha? Not familiar with diawas. How do they compare to the shimanos for size? How do the shimanos perform?

The Alphas is in the smaller class of Daiwa baitcasters. A 50 sized Shimano will be slightly smaller. Usually for finesse/smaller lures. Usually the comfortable low end of 1/8-3/16.nikbrewer wrote:what is based off the alpha? Not familiar with diawas. How do they compare to the shimanos for size? How do the shimanos perform?
Here is a link to the SV105 (US version. Of the Alphas SV):

Maybe have a look at the JDM Shimano Conquest BFS? Not sure if your into round reels but if you want to spoil yourself this is the way in my opinion.

I have found that the right rod is the key to throwing really light baits. I'd suggest you do some rod research in the Rod forum, before you spend a lot on a new reel.

So I am guessing the SS sv 105 is a jdm alpha based reel. Is it about the same size as a curado 70?

So my budget is around $300. Looking on Japan tackle, they have a Shimano still 100, says it's good down to 3/16. Any reviews of this reel?

There can be some confusion about Daiwa reelsnikbrewer wrote:So I am guessing the SS sv 105 is a jdm alpha based reel. Is it about the same size as a curado 70?
The number (105, 103) usually denotes the spool size. A 105 is shallower than a 103 (holds less line).
The SS is a less expensive version of the Steez, which is Daiwa''s highest end low profile series.
SS SV 103 http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Daiwa_SS ... -DSSV.html has a deeper spool than the SS SV 105 http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Daiwa_SS ... e-DS5.html
The SV105 http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Daiwa_SV ... -D5SV.html is based off the Alphas.

Since you have the Chronarch50E, why don't you put this spool in it with some nice spool bearings and call it a day?

Wow, diawas are confusing. How does the sv105 compare in size to the tatula ct?
I don't have the chronarch 50e. Sold it for some stupid reason.

The performance of the Scorpion BFS is similar to the performance of the Aldebaran BFS. But the Aldebaran BFS is as expected a little bit more refined and the retrieve is smoother. The normal Aldebaran 51 is also a nice reel, but the performance of the Scorpion/Aldebaran BFS with baits lighter than 1/4oz is much better.nikbrewer wrote:I also lover small reels.
