Thinking of buying a Met mgl. Which is preferred-US version or JDM? And why?

They are the same exact reel. Buy one in the US from an authorized dealer if warranty is important to you. Buy one from a JDM supplier if price trumps warranty for you.

Actually the JDM version has a really shallow 70 size spool.

Oh ok... if so, I didn't notice or remember. I have the JDM version.

So is the 70 size spool an issue?

That depends on you, these reels can cast a long way so if you are using heavier line it may be an issue.

I don't think it has a different spool...

JDM:
12lb / 100m (= 109,361yd)
http://fishing.shimano.co.jp/product/reel/4353

USDM:
12lb / 110 yd
http://fish.shimano.com/content/sac-fis ... m-mgl.html

Shouldn't a 70 size spool have less line capacity?

Don't go by those numbers, go by your eyes. When I got my JDM MGL I thought the spool seemed shallower than the 13 Met, which is a 100 size spool. The USDM MGL is supposed to be a 150 size spool.

confirming JDM spool smaller. I don't know what the difference equates too;;;; maybe 20 yards.

Regardless, if you throw 30# braid as I do the JDM version has plenty of line capacity, 12# FC plenty of capacity. If you need 20# FC on a C-Rig rod, then think about the US version or better yet get a deep spool which has capacity of a 200E.

Regardless, get the MGL as it is a great reel

At my age {78-79 next month} I doubt that I could empty the spool on either one!

unless you are blessed with incredible shoulder joints you will not. I got my 73 year old father a MGL JDM in March. He is no where near spooling it and that would be true if I put 25# mono on it

No I had surgery on my shoulder about 4 months ago and am still undergoing physical therapy. My casting distance is limited but at least at this time I can still fish and launch my boat for which I am very thankful.

my father underwent complete right shoulder replacement in September 2015 and has recovered very well. all the best to getting you back to fishing without pain. I keep trying to teach him to pitch but some dogs too old to learn new tricks apparently.

you can always pick up a spare US spool and have both sizes. adds some versatility as well.

The JDM model DOES have a noticeably smaller spool than the US version. Unless you're putting on 25lb mono and throwing as far as you can, I wouldn't concern myself with "spooling" the reel. I have a few of each, besides spool size, there is no difference.
