Drop shot reel

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Drop shot reel

Post by airtreeswateranimals » Fri Jun 30, 2017 7:56 pm

2500 or 3000? I'm going back and forth trying to decide. I normally use a 2500 to fish most bass fishing applications but I see many articles and videos saying that with the larger spool size on the 3000 you get less line twist etc. just looking for more insight on this topic. Thanks

I asked a question very similar to yours. CAl replied that he prefers the 3000 series for the larger spool diamiter. Also you can get spare spools for different uses.

3000 is ALWAYS better for braid or fluorocarbon, issue is, the spool has to actually be bigger. Some manufacturers just use a DEEPER spool for 3000 size reels and this will give you no benefit aside of having extra line. I always try to find that out, easiest way to tell for me is weight comparison of 2500 vs 3000, if they are identical or barely different, generally they just use a deeper spool. If the reels are more than a few 10ths of an ounce different or more than that, the 3000 actually has a bigger spool and will give you benefits.

I haven't had any issues using a 2500 sized spool when drop shotting. I have a shimano stradic ci4 and daiwa lexa both in 2500 size. I mainly use the lexa for drop shotting, but I have used the stradic as well in the past.

Neither for FC mainline. 2505 or other shallow spool in a 2000 sized reel. Deep spools are icky.

The Stella C3000S is a shallow spool, 3000 sized reel/spool ;) ... though I don't know if it's still offered.

I would opt for a 2500HGS or 2000S...less weight. But the 3000S is beautiful. =P~

Regarding line twist - close the bail by hand and that fixes a lot of it...or just hang the bait and let it untwist. Or use a baitcaster.

The other consideration is IPT. Faster reels can keep up with smallies coming up the water column...if that is pertinent.

But it weighs over 8oz. The 2500HGS is around 7 and the 2000HGS is under 7. :big grin:

Depends on whether the angler prioritizes weight or line twist reduction.

Are you comparing the same generation Stellas? The FEs didn't have that big of a difference and even the current gen Stella has a difference of only .2oz between 2500 and 3000 ... though sadly it doesn't seem there's a C3000S offered now.

You are right Cal. I was looking at the 2014 series.

Yeah - too bad they offed the 3000S. If it was comparable in weight it would have been the perfect compromise. :(

There are too many generations to keep track. I can't believe mine is outdated. Zander is fishing the current gen.

I think it depends on what line size you will be using. I drop shot with either braid or Berkley Nanofil with around 4-6 pound mono diameter. This works perfect for me on a 2500 size daiwa reel and 7' rod. If I were using line with an 8-10 pound diameter then I would probably choose a 3000 size.

I currently throw drop shots with a 3000 size reel and have had minimal issues. As long as you take care of your reel and your line, though, I can't imagine there being too much of an issue with a 2500 size. I like the 3000 because I run straight 8# fluorocarbon and prefer to have more line on my reel than less, if that makes sense.
