MGX vs ALX

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

MGX vs ALX

Post by Markymarc » Thu May 11, 2017 7:10 am

Ok so this winter I purchased 2 Revo MGX with 6.4 ratio for 2 casting rods - topwater/squarebill and spinnerbait/buzzbait.
Should I swap them for ALX or are MGX good enough for casting ?

I might need reels for flipping but then I would get 8.0 MGX.

I am having post purchase remorse

Maybe I'm looking at the wrong reels, but the MGX looks like a better reel to me than the ALX.
But the ALX looks like a great reel, too, so you probably won't go wrong with it, if you decide to buy one.

Not a fan of the 8.0 in the mgxtreme2
For anything other than small squarebills, jerkbaits and finesse.

Hows the drag on the mgx? The xtreme2 is very finesse oriented. Not a good spinnerbait and jig reel

I have the old mgx...is the new one tiny like the extreme 2?
Same spool?

The mgx is the nicer of the two reels and will suit you just fine. The centrifugal braking on the Mgx seems less finicky than their mag setups that the alx has. No need to have buyers remorse. The only area where I would see the alx being better is saltwater.

The new mgxtreme mgx and alx are all on the same frame design so they are the same size. The mgxtreme and mgx are magnesium frames and the alx is aluminum.

I'll bet that MGX spool is going to be much lighter than the ALX spool.

Right. MGXtreme 8g, MGX 9g and ALX 11g.
