chronarch mg 50 bearings
Is it possible to change out some of the bushings on these reels to ball bearings?
I own four that I love, but I'm fishing heavier line in gnarly stuff now, and I don't want to ruin one by winching on it too hard.

As long as they are bushings that are round like a bearing would be, yes.

Thanks. I was hoping someone here might have already done it, so I could learn from them.LgMouthGambler wrote:As long as they are bushings that are round like a bearing would be, yes.

Honestly, on any reel that I own, if there is a way to replace the bushing with a bearing, it gets done. I cant imagine that specific reel having that problem, if any, I would guess maybe under the drive shaft there would be a bushing instead of a bearing. I have never taken one of them reels apart yet.mark poulson wrote:Thanks. This particular reel does not have any bushings that are used as a bearing that can be replaced.
Its been years but have worked on quiet a few of them.

Thanks for the info. Now I'll have to find something else to pound my head into the wall over.jpd0144 wrote:This particular reel does not have any bushings that are used as a bearing that can be replaced.

Your welcome. A classic reel for sure. I'd pop a longer bearing supported handle of your choice on them if they are stock and enjoy fishing !

That sounds like a plan! Do you know which bearing supported handles will fit these reels? I have four, and I'd love to upgrade the handles.jpd0144 wrote:Your welcome. A classic reel for sure. I'd pop a longer bearing supported handle of your choice on them if they are stock and enjoy fishing !

There are multiple options but this is one of my favorites for the Ch50. It has 1 bearing per knob and 1 bushing (non replaceable) but you go from a 80mm handle to a 84mm (considered standard length in most cases) and gain the addition of Power Grip II knobs. Between the added length and size displacement of the knobs in my hands it makes the Ch50 feel more powerful. Not to mention the color of the handle keeps with the reels stock look. Good luck in your search !

Scroll down and you will see a pic of a 50ng with this handle installed.

I'll order one today.
As for color, other than trying to tell one from another quickly, I really (reely) don't care what a reel looks like. For me, a retired carpenter, they are just tools.
They are to be taken care of and kept sharp, of course, but, first and foremost, they are to be used to do the job, in this case catching fish.
