Chronarch MGL

Reels are the hottest topic for TackleTour. Everyone wants to know what the latest and greatest is and how they compare to the old guard. What's the best for light stuff, or what's your suggestion for heavy cover. Do we really need different retrieve ratios? It's all in here.

Not this one Kevin. Your handle is on the other side.

The ci4 "was" saltwater ready but the spool would corrode if used in salt. Only some spools did that. Idk if they fixed it or not.

I realized that about 30 min after I posted this and didn't get back in time to correct myself. ](*,)

Looking forward to experiencing your handiwork, thanks for turning it around so fast! I've got a few more reels that need tuning that may be coming your way soon.

usually when a reel is not recommended for saltwater it has some form of magnesium on it.

It's because of the spool. The old version had some serious problems with it. It seems to be a difference in materials causing galvanic corrosion. Shimanos made from magnesium have always been ok for use in the salt.

it depends on what the magnesium is mixed with. obviously the make up of the materials used for that spool are a no go in salt for shimano.

It's weird that they would change the alloy in their aluminum for the spools. All my non Xship Shimanos have no issue with spool corrosion, including Cores and Chonarch Mg. Since the newer reels have been out, the spools have had this problem. My '13 Met spool doesn't corrode as bad as the CI4, but there are some spots. They definitely changed something and it's not for the better. And yet the Met MGL is still rated as saltwater capable, but the Ch MGL is not :-k

And with that said, Shimano took really great care of me and replaced several of my spools. Have to give credit where credit is due =D>

I also have nothing bad to say about shimano's customer service. You are right though ,the low profiles with xship definitely have a very different feel to the spools than the previous generation reels.

Looks like Cal just released a review. First reel I've seen given a 10 on performance.

Is it all the MGL spools, or just the Chronarch? I've had my eye on that reel but spool corrosion is a no-go.
