SV103 for big baits?
SV103 for big baits?
I'm new to Daiwa, finally got myself a sv103 from ttt. I know that SV launches light baits with aplomb, but how about big baits? I'm planning on throwing nothing lighter than 1.25oz with this reel, up to 3.5oz. With the stock reel, should I be starting with more or less braking? Are there spools better suited for distance with heavy baits?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I've never casted anything that heavy with mine. The 1016 spool might be a better fit for this.
Re: SV103 for big baits?
I don't necessarily need the larger capacity (20lb braid to floro leader here), but from what I'm reading the stronger inductor spring might be more suited for heavy bait duty. I'll look into this more...haven't even spooled line on the reel and I'm looking to tweak!Hogsticker2 wrote:I've never casted anything that heavy with mine. 2-3 oz bait will cause more than enough tension with the braid to snap your braid or break your leader.reason162 wrote:I don't necessarily need the larger capacity (20lb braid to floro leader here), but from what I'm reading the stronger inductor spring might be more suited for heavy bait duty. I'd probably run a 1016, and have Ian mod even mod the spring in that.
Re: SV103 for big baits?
Are you talking about the SV103 specifically, or braid and 2 - 3 oz baits in general?IAY wrote:2-3 oz bait will cause more than enough tension with the braid to snap your braid or break your leader.
Re: SV103 for big baits?
You might have been better off with a regular Zillion over the SV103 Zillion given the weight you intend to cast. As far a 103 compatible spools go the T3 1016, MX and Ballistic are good for that range. The LIN10 spool is amazing as well but never found outside on the LIN10 and is very, very similar to the T3 1016.
Re: SV103 for big baits?
I dont see any issues with bigger lures. I do not fish lures over 1oz or so but the SV103 stock is plenty able to handle just about
anything you throw with it. I think that what makes it special and in a sense not finesse. Think your dial will be between 3 and 4, as the heavier weight shouldn't be an issue with casting. JM2cents

SV103 will be fine if you load it up with 16 lb nylon or fluoro. I am just talking about braid and big baits, especially with leader.reason162 wrote:Are you talking about the SV103 specifically, or braid and 2 - 3 oz baits in general?IAY wrote:2-3 oz bait will cause more than enough tension with the braid to snap your braid or break your leader.

Re: SV103 for big baits?
I've thrown a 2 oz. Bull Shad a lot with the SV103 on the F8-73X 2016 Destroyer Faust and it's been great. I'm not running a braid to FC set up, but using 22# Sunline Shooter Defier Armilo. I'd wonder about how bad the dig in would be using baits that large with such thin braid.
IAY - maybe you're referring to the light braid to leader for the 2 to 3 oz baits being a problem? Big bait guys regularly use a heavy braid to heavy mono shock leader when fishing baits up to and often even well over 8 oz with no problems. I have one swim bait set up with 70# Daiwa Samurai Braid to a 30# Sunline Supernatural mono shock leader and haven't had break off issues with baits in the 3 to 6 oz range.

The dig-in with thin braid is a constant worry, but try getting a big paddletail down 70' in current with 50-70lb braid...by the time it gets there it's behind the boat!bronzefly wrote:I've thrown a 2 oz. I've been looking at the HLC spool. Assuming it will fit the sv103, is the main difference to the stock spool a stronger spring? Asides from line capacity that is.

HLC spool won't work in the SV103.reason162 wrote:The dig-in with thin braid is a constant worry, but try getting a big paddletail down 70' in current with 50-70lb braid...by the time it gets there it's behind the boat!bronzefly wrote:I've thrown a 2 oz. Re: SV103 for big baits?
Thanks, I'm just gonna spool up the stock reel and give it a whirl, see what happens!Hogsticker2 wrote:HLC spool won't work in the SV103.
Re: SV103 for big baits?
If you can add a faster worm gear, that will help with the digging in of the line.
Re: SV103 for big baits?
I would buy an OG Zillion instead tbh, that reel throws large baits so well. And if you ever wanted to run straight mono or flouro you would have the capacity.
